Republican , Dave McCormick, an Army veteran and former wall account CEO, has dismissed three-term Democrat Sen.  , Bob Casey Jr. in Pennsylvania’s nationwide watched , U. S. Senate , race, according to The Associated Press.
The contest widened in the last days of Casey’s campaign, even though she remained in the lead in polls for the majority of the campaign. And McCormick came out on top by less than 1 % of the vote. As vote were gathered throughout the state, it took two days before the competition was scheduled to be held.
Given the tight percentage, it is still feasible to do so. However, McCormick has been predicting confidence since the election’s day when he declared to the electorate that the competition was “headed in a very nice direction.”
” That American dream is slipping apart”, McCormick said at his effects watch group in , Pittsburgh. ” We’ve got to get it back for every single Pennsylvanian and every one American, and we need fresh leadership”.
McCormick leads by just over 30, 000 seats. The , Pennsylvania , secretary of state’s workplace announced Thursday night that there are at least 100, 000 ballots still to be tabulated.
Casey stated in a speech on Thursday night that he would not give in while the counting approach is in progress.
” Pennsylvania is where our political operation was born”, he said. We may allow the counting process to proceed and make sure that every voting cast may be counted.
Under , Pennsylvania , law, recounts occur automatically for tribes determined by a margin of 0.5 % or less. McCormick now leads around that amount. But many districts, including , Philadelphia, have never processed all of their interim vote.
Before the AP called in, the McCormick plan declared win earlier on Thursday.
” While seats continue to be counted, any way you slice it,  , Dave McCormick , will be the next , United States , senator from Pennsylvania”, McCormick spokesperson , Elizabeth Gregory , said.
If the AP visit holds, Casey’s death will be seen as a stunning development in , Pennsylvania , elections. The average, who formerly held the positions of status manager and auditor common, is the brother of a well-known governor and has won six provincial elections with notable margins.
It’s even more significant because Pennsylvania’s nationwide election results this time appear to be atypical. Five political swing state had , Senate , races this month, and , Donald Trump , won all five. But citizens from , Michigan , to , Arizona , appear to have been cutting their cards, because Democratic , Senate , individuals have won or are leading four of those tribes.
Casey is poised to be the only Democratic , Senate , member in a swing position to drop little this season, allowing McCormick and Trump to complete a nationwide push in , Pennsylvania.
McCormick made his second run for office in 2022, losing by fewer than 1, 000 seats to , Mehmet Oz , in the , GOP , main for that year ‘s , Senate , competition in , Pennsylvania.
Throughout the 2024 battle, he worked relentlessly to weave Casey to Vice President Kamala Harris ‘ plan, casting the former as a “weak career politician” who, despite his mild reputation, would be a “rubber stamp” for a progressive Democrat establishment.
McCormick’s captivating personal story, which he both used as a powerful selling point for his candidacy and as a target for Democratic attacks, was also made famous.
McCormick was born in , Western Pennsylvania , and grew up in , Bloomsburg, where his dad was the leader of the condition school in the area. He participated in the wrestling group, participated in the U.S. Military Academy, and served in the Gulf War. He received a Ph. D. in foreign relations from , Princeton University , after the battle.
McCormick next spent about a century in , Pittsburgh, where he led the software firm FreeMarkets. In 2005, he joined George W. Bush’s leadership, with important roles in the , Commerce Department , and the , U. S.  , Treasury.
After leaving , Washington , in 2009, McCormick became an executive at the , Connecticut-based , Bridgewater Associates, the largest wall bank in the world and the subject of some of Casey’s jabs. Bridgewater, for example, played a innovative part in opening up possibilities for , U. S.  , investment companies in Chinese businesses, leading Casey to say it was hypocritical of McCormick to discuss about , China , on the campaign trail.
McCormick left the firm around the day he launched his political career in 2022, and concerns about whether he has thoroughly moved up to , Pennsylvania , dogged him throughout his two runs for the , Senate. Yet this year, it was reported that he often flies up to , Connecticut, where one of his sons from a previous relationship lives.
McCormick is now married to , Dina Powell McCormick, who was a deputy national security adviser in Trump’s second management and who also served in the Bush administration.
The race saw more than$ 300 million in spending by the campaigns, their parties, and outside groups. The largest outside earner was Keystone Renewal,  , a pro-McCormick very Congress backed mainly by banking business entrepreneurs, some of whom knew the Republican from his time at Bridgewater.
The PAC’s saving was vital to making McCormick economically aggressive in only his second run for office against a guy who had won statewide elections, including tribes for , Pennsylvania , auditor general and manager.
Ultimately, McCormick’s message resonated with voters anxious about the economy — and eager to back a candidate aligned with Trump.
McCormick “has a great background in business”, said Mary Dodgi, 80, a retired teacher who lives in , Ross Township , in the , North Hills  , of , Pittsburgh , and who, until a decade ago, had been a registered Democrat. Now, she said, McCormick and Trump represented the party” for the people”.
At McCormick’s watch party in , Pittsburgh, supporters who had spent weeks knocking on doors took time to celebrate.  , Gloria Hutcherson, 73, a self-described born-again Christian who lives in , Tennessee , and spent two weeks canvassing in , Harrisburg , and , Pittsburgh, said McCormick shared Trump’s conservative values, like excluding transgender athletes from women’s sports and closing the border.
” He is a businessman, like Donald Trump”, she said.
In the 2022 , Senate , race, Trump snubbed McCormick in the primary by endorsing Oz, the celebrity physician who was defeated by , U. S.  , Sen.  , John Fetterman, D-Pa., in the general election. This year, Trump endorsed McCormick, and he faced no significant competition in the primary.
Given the Senate’s flimsy partisan margins, that created a race with no less on the line than in 2022, but with a significantly different tone than the contest between Oz and Fetterman, which featured polarizing and attention-grabbing personalities.
Casey is a rank-and-file Democratic senator who preaches the virtues of bipartisan civility, while McCormick is a clean-cut Army man-turned-businessman. There was little drama in the race, and voters had to make a relatively straightforward choice between a career politician and a plutocratic newcomer, despite neither man’s campaign trail.
No candidate for president criticized his party’s nominee, but both candidates aimed to make a point between themselves and the front-runner.
Harris resisted saying he opposed a ban on natural gas fracking in 2019, but he has since resisted this position. And McCormick said throughout the race that he believed , Joe Biden , won the 2020 presidential election, which is usually seen as an affront by Trump.
