TOI correspondent from London: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s attempts to woo British Indians by hosting a Diwali party at No 10 has backfired after it emerged that alcohol and meat were served, offending many in the diaspora.
The annual gathering, which included prayer, lighting decorations, a statement from the prime minister, and classic Indian party, was attended by society leaders, Labour MPs, Labour ministers, and members of the armed forces.
However, some friends were shocked to discover sheep skewers, bass, beer and wine served. Some customers told the cooking staff that the products had been ordered, but some expressed impact.
When Rishi Sunak, then-PM, had hosted the function, alcohol and flesh were never served last year.
American Indians told TOI it was unpleasant, repulsive, and tainted the religious tone of the event.
” Diwali is typically accompanied by sattvik food because of its spiritual component.” These occasions are meant to be spiritual. There is an aspect of devotion involved. You ca n’t be drunk while simultaneously appealing to the deities for wealth and prosperity. Shri Rama, also known as Maryada Purushottama, is seen as possessing the highest set of ideals. British Hindu pandit Satish K. Sharma told TOI,” You ca n’t celebrate his return to Ayodhya by consuming abducted animals and alcohol.”
A spokeswoman for Insight UK, a cultural movement of English Hindus and Indians, said:” The spiritual importance of Diwali should not be undermined…”
In a speech on Instagram, Insight UK said:” Diwali is not just a day for celebration, but likewise holds a deeply religious significance. Diwali, a sacred holiday that emphasizes purity and devotion, typically involves vegetarian meals and rigid alcohol prohibition. The prime minister’s own Diwali celebration’s list displays an abhorrent lack of understanding and appreciation for the religious customs associated with the holiday. In order to promote greater social awareness and inclusivity, Hindu society organizations and religious leaders must beconsulted.
No. has received a letter from Insight UK. 10 offering to guide them on future spiritual beliefs and issuing a statement on it.
Sunil Poshakwale, professor of international funding at Cranfield University, said,” It is better for 10 Downing Street to not host a Halloween welcome if American Hindus are to be insulted like this”.
