Michael Reagan, the oldest son of former President Ronald Reagan, called the latest antagonism between political events” sad”, adding that his father’s documentary film is a “history training” on the importance of cordiality.
Michael Reagan praised the leadership style of his father, which established a space for friendship and admiration among people despite their varied political viewpoints, in reflection on the success of the movie.
“]The film ] really is a history lesson for people”, Michael Reagan told the Washington Examiner. ” It’s a history lesson of what we’ve lost, and that’s what’s truly sad”.
” My father was prejudiced against me,” my father said. My gosh, when he ran for governor, he was called a discriminatory and everything else. When he ran for president, he was gonna destroy Social Security. He was a discriminatory. He was going to get rid of Medicare, and he’s gonna, you know, he’s going to launch World War II I”, he added. ” All these items, but it’s all in how you handle it. He did n’t let those factors influence his objectives. He did n’t react to it in a negative way. He just did n’t react to it. He simply went on with his job, what he wanted to accomplish. And as you watch and watch the movie, I believe that’s crucial. That’s exactly what he did”.
After an assassination attempt against the former president, Michael Reagan recalled a scene from the movie where Thomas” Tip” O’Neill, a former Democratic Speaker of the House, was visiting Ronald Reagan in a hospital.
After my dad is shot, Michael Reagan said,” One of the most poignant parts of the movie is because it would n’t happen in the world we live in.” Who is sitting in the chair with a necklace praying for him and with him when he awakes in the hospital? Tip O’Neill, speaker of the House. And you reflect and ask,” Do you believe that would occur in the world we live in today?” Possibly not. And that’s really unfortunate”.
The former president’s boy pointed to social media as the main culprit for tomorrow’s divisive rhetoric, even warning today’s officials to find brotherhood with and speak to those who are not necessarily followers.
” Talking to those who are applauding you is simple.” That’s simple. The hard part is talking to people who do n’t applaud, right? And having a concept that will engage those people and bring them to bear,” Reagan said. Ronald Reagan won because of that,”. He was able to garner independents, conservatives, Democrats, Republicans, and what have you” . ,
Michael Reagan even praised Dennis Quaid’s achievement in his position depicting the previous president, calling it “great”.
