Sri Lanka’s National People’s Power ( NPP ) party, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, is set secure majority in the parliamentary snap elections. By Friday at 6 am ( local time ), the NPP had secured 52 seats, with about 62 per cent of the national vote, totaling over 4.4 million votes. The group now holds 35 tickets through district-based equal representation.
The National Democratic Front ( NDF), which was supported by former president Ranil Wickremesinghe, received less than 5 % of the vote, while the Samagi Jana Balawegaya ( SJB) received 18 % and the National Democratic Front ( NDF), which was supported by former president Ranil Wickremesinghe, received less than 5 %. The NDP only has one chair, while the SJB has eight.
The Sri Lanka People’s Front ( SLPP ), associated with the Rajapaksa family, has managed to secure 2 seats despite ranking fourth in the vote count.
According to social observers, the NPP’s performance has significantly improved since the national poll of September. They anticipate the group will surpass 150 votes, securing an overall majority in the 225-member council.
In anticipation of the election results on November 14, Dissanayake’s NPP, which was established in 2019, is vying for a lot to implement significant anti-poverty measures and address socioeconomic challenges brought on by Sri Lanka’s severe financial crisis. In 2022, a$ 2.9 billion IMF loan was prompted by this issue, which led to the resignation of former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Dissanayake, who won the presidency in September, eyes criticism from Sajith Premadasa’s United People’s Power and liberal parties.
