Donald Trump, the president-elect, may fulfill his campaign promise to end the CBP One federal phone app, which enables refugees to apply for entrance to the country through legislation that bypasses Congress.
” I will put an end to the American migrant war as president right away. We will stop all migrant flights, end all illegal entries, terminate the Kamala phone app for smuggling illegals ( CBP One App ), revoke deportation immunity, suspend refugee resettlement, and return Kamala’s illegal migrants to their home countries ( also known as remigration )”, Trump wrote in a post to X on Sept. 15.

Immigration plan analysts believe that the plan promise to remove the immigration functions the Biden administration added to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection software could lead to an influx of illegal immigrants or would reduce immigration from the country to the southern border.
Immigrants in Mexico may no longer be able to apply for appointments if Trump removed the app, opting instead to cross the border illegally. However, turning off the application may also suggest that foreigners living in their own countries would be able to opt not to enter the country knowing there is no chance of them being accepted into the majority through the hiring process.
According to Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, senior colleague at the American Immigration Council in Washington, discontinuing the software may cause more people to travel to the border in the near future in search of an interview on the lengthy delay list.
” Ending the Biden administration’s different legal processes could lead to an increase in relocation at the frontier, although the specific impact is hard to predict with any certainty”, Reichlin-Melnick said in a concept. Instead of waiting weeks in Mexico for a chance to enter officially, ending the CBP One operation at ports of entry perhaps promote some migrants to try their luck crossing illegally.
In early 2023, the Biden-Harris leadership added two additional features to the game that made it possible for immigrants to apply for admission from outside the country or meet with a US customs officer. Republicans have criticized the move as a secret that would allow hundreds of thousands of refugees to enter the country in less than two years because it was intended to give them a way to apply for admission without crossing the southern boundary between ports of entry improperly.
The CBP One application permits refugees from four places, Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, to use to enter the U. S. on pardon, which allows an individual to stay for two years and receive a work force. The cost of their international commercial flight must be paid for by the recipient. They also need a sponsor in the United States. More than half a million people have been admitted since the entire admissions process began in January 2023.
The app’s function for allowing immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to apply and fly into the country was part of a” carrot and stick deal with Mexico”, and in return, Mexico allowed the U. S. the ability to remove some citizens of those countries at the border back to Mexico.
” Termination of the program could threaten that deal, limiting the ability of the U. S. to address migration from countries like Venezuela which limit deportation flights”, said Reichlin-Melnick.
The second purpose of the app is to facilitate meetings with U.S. customs officers between immigrants in Mexico and at a land port of entry on the southern border. Up to 1, 450 appointments can be scheduled daily — for a total of more than 43, 000 per month. Immigration agents who schedule appointments are overwhelmingly accepted at one of the eight immigration offices that have been used for appointments for months.
The CBP One app goes beyond the executive branch’s authority, according to the Center for Immigration Studies, and it takes a hard-line position on immigration.
Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies, called the CBP One app a “gateway” for immigrants to enter the country because it entices them to travel to Mexico, where they can then request an appointment.
The Biden White House has not yet disclosed whether it will increase the number of daily appointments in order to attract more people into the country before Trump takes office, according to Eric Ruark, research director for the nonpartisan immigration organization Numbers USA.
The Biden administration “has used [temporary protected status ] and the CBP One app to entice people who would appear to be going through legal paths.” Are they going to try to expedite those steps in order to attract more people, and then have the Trump administration deal with trying to do the opposite?” asked Ruark. I anticipate that they will make an effort to get as many people in before January 2025.
A potential influx of people who, frustrated appointments are no longer available, choose to enter the United States between the ports of entry may already be in place by the Trump administration.
Trump may reinstate the” Remain in Mexico” and” Migrant Protection Protocols,” which required asylum seekers to reside south of the border while their cases are pending in immigration court.

Additionally, President Joe Biden passed executive orders in June that significantly affected the ability of illegal immigrants seeking asylum at the border and harshly retaliated against immigrants who were detained for crossing the border without seeking asylum.
Immigrants caught between ports of entry “would be automatically disqualified for asylum” and face a five-year ban on seeking asylum if Trump kept the Biden executive order in place.
