One of the White House‘s most important Cabinet posts, Howard Lutnick and Scott Bessent are apparently being considered for the position. In the worst inflationary period since the early 1980s, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen would take over as minister. She oversaw the agency’s leadership and supervised the economic recovery from the pandemic.
Bessent, 62, and Lutnick, 63, are popular in the financial world. Although Trump has shown an aptitude for wonder with nominees, such as his decision to select former Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz for solicitor general, they are apparently the leading contenders for the Treasury position.
The implied odds of Bessent being Trump’s pick were 68 %, which gave Lutnick a 30 % chance of being nominated for the influential role, according to Polymarket, an online platform for wagers on elections and other political drama.
After businessman hedge fund manager John Paulson withdrew his name from argument this year, the race for Treasury chief slowed.
Scott Bessent
Bessent, a well-known hedge fund manager, was the founding partner of Key Square Group, a company that invests in New York. Some Trump consultants are pushing for his election, according to Bloomberg.
The South Carolina local attended Yale College, graduating in 1984. In the 1980s, he began working for Soros Fund Management and rose to the top of the organization’s symbol shaft.
Given that billionaire George Soros is a progressive businessman who has become a bit of a bogeyman on the right and is one of the most potent donors in American politics, Bessent’s connections to the fund may surprise you.
Bessent later transitioned to Soros Fund Management as the company’s chief investment officer. He left the firm in 2015 to begin Key Square Group.
Bessent has made contributions to candidates from both major events over the years, including hosting an Al Gore charity in 2000. He has grown extremely close to Trump in recent years, donating$ 1 million to Trump’s annual commission after the president-elect’s second win in 2016.
Bessent, a close economic advisor to Trump, has urged him to adopt a “3-3-3” plan, which may result in a 3 % GDP growth, a deficit reduction of 3 %, and an increase in energy production that would equal 3 million barrels of oil per day, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Bessent has been praised in public and described as “one of the leading economists on Wall Street” in a speech he gave before the Detroit Economic Club.
Howard Lutnick
Cantor Fitzgerald, a multibillionaire company, is led by Lutnick as its president and CEO. Laut the Wall Street Journal, Lautnick has recently made an immediate appeal to Trump for the position. The political transition team already co-chairs Lutnick.
Lutnick is a tribal of Long Island and went on to graduate from Haverford College, a private liberal arts college in Pennsylvania, in 1983 with a degree in economics.
After graduating from college, Lutnick immediately rose up the ranks to become the company’s president and CEO in 1991. Five years later, he was appointed committee chairman.
The Sept. 11 terrorist strikes left a deep mark on Lutnick’s career. Cantor Fitzgerald’s headquarters were located above the 100th surface of the North Tower, and there were no victims from the assault. In total, 658 of the fund’s 960 people at the time were killed in the attack, including Lutnick’s nephew, Gary.
Lutnick would have been working that morning, but he managed to survive as he was visiting his son on his first day of school.
He disbanded Cantor Fitzgerald’s BGC Lovers in 2004, creating its own financial service company, Lutnick even serves as chairman and CEO.
Then, Lutnick is a close personal adviser to Trump and spoke at the president-elect’s Madison Square Garden protest in New York. Lutnick apparently works from 6: 30 a. m. to 9 a. m. with his businesses and therefore individuals for the Trump change group before returning to working on his businesses from 4 p. m. to 10: 30 p. m.
