What do we hear about the draft law?
The suggested new law increases the term limits from five to seven years while also limiting the maximum of two terms in office.
Additionally, the law prohibits family members from appointing a president and abolishes the position of ng a presi prime d minister.
Additionally, the legal change would require that all political candidates be Gabonese, have at least one parent who was born in Gabon, and have a spouse who is Gabonese. The standard disqualifies ousted king Ali Bongo Ondimba, who has a French-born family, Sylvia Valentin Bongo Ondimba, and reduce his children from actually leading the country.
Gabon’s interim president, General Brice Oligui Nguema, touted the election as a sign of the government’s dedication to a democratic change.
The military leaders of Gabon have tentatively scheduled a 2025 summer transfer to civilian rule.
Nguema is not permitted to run for president under the document constitution.
Ali Bongo Ondimba was replaced by Junta next month.
In a coup that put past president Ali Bongo Ondimba under house arrest, military officers seized control in August 2023. Bongo was charged with reckless government and significant larceny by the junta.
A week later, the ousted president was granted charitable release, allowing him to go abroad for medical treatment.
Bongo came to power in 2009 after the death of his father, Omar Bongo Ondimba, who had ruled Gabon for 41 times.
