People in Sydney and along Australia’s southeast coast are being asked to get fatal funnel-web spider to aid in the production of life-saving antivenom.
The Australian Reptile Park ( ARP ) issued the call as part of the spiders ‘ breeding season, which is when they are most active in homes and gardens.
The funnel-web insect, known for its fast-acting poison, can kill a man in as little as 15 hours. No fatalities have been reported since the introduction of an antivenom in 1981, despite its lethal potential.
However, creating the antivenom requires nearly 150 spider for just one bottle, prompting ARP to find common aid.

The garden advises keeping the spiders and their egg cysts in a covered container by using a long-handled knife. Egg glands, which contain up to 200 spiderlings, provide a major boost to antivenom creation.
The ants are typically found in moist, cool areas, including piles of laundry, boots left outside, and lawn particles. Their carefully grouped eyes and shiny, black appearance help them stand out from other similar species.
Nicole Webber, whose life was saved by the antivenom in 1994, urged people to help the project. After being bitten, I immediately experienced anaphylaxis impact. Four sessions of that magic pill are why I’m still around”, she said, as reported by The Guardian.
ARP remains the sole developer of funnel-web antivenom, ensuring its presence through open gifts of ants. For quick insect set, drop-off points have been set up throughout the area.
Occupants are reminded to pursue first-aid measures if bitten: use a pressure bandage, remain quiet, and get immediate medical attention.
