Just days before they took office in 2022, Portuguese President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday revealed an alleged plot to poison both him and vice chairman Geraldo Alckmin.
Lula expressed love for surviving the story at a ceremony held at the presidential palace. I am still alive, which makes me yet more appreciative. The attempt to poison me and vice chairman Alckmin did not work, we are around”, he said, according to CNN.
Previous Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is also facing charges for allegedly plotting a revolt following Lula’s win, is in increased legal trouble as a result of the revelation.
Brazil’s national authorities document submitted to South American government’s supreme judge accused Bolsonaro of having “full information” of strategies to reduce Lula from taking business.
The detailed, ten thousand-page report alleged ideas to use arsenic and explosives to attack vice president Alckmin and justice of the supreme court Alexandre de Moraes.
According to CNN, five defendants, including Bolsonaro’s past adviser and retired public Mario Fernandes, were arrested earlier this year. In order to take control of the state, the team reportedly sought to establish an” Institutional Crisis Management Office.”
Bolsonaro responded to the accusations on X, stating that he had not already reviewed them. We must examine what this provincial authorities indictment entails. I did wait for the attorney. This, evidently, will go to the attorney general’s Office. The battle begins at PGR, which is where it begins. I ca n’t stand to be criticized by a team that uses creativity. “he said.
According to the CNN report, Bolsonaro also claimed Justice Moraes was in charge of a slanted research, alleging that defendants were detained without proper charges and that the evidence was fabricated.
Among those indicted are Bolsonaro’s original defence minister Walter Braga Netto, ex-Security Chief Augusto Heleno, and other top leaders. Bolsonaro’s child, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, dismissed the claims on X, remarking”, As disgusting as it may be to think about killing people, it is not a violence.”
Following the unrest on January 8, when Bolsonaro supporters occupied government buildings in protest of Lula’s president, the revelations heightened tensions.
