As an outbreak of the aquatic virus continues to wreak havoc on , California , crops, the number of infected pets and staff is stacking up.
As of Friday, state agriculture representatives confirmed 294 dairies— representing a little more than 25 % of the country’s 1, 100 dairies— are now under confinement according to the , H5N1 avian virus.
On the government’s poultry farms, more than 4 million birds and animals have been killed in an attempt to prevent the virus from spreading.
” It’s a mess”, said , Bill Mattos, president of the , California Poultry Federation. ” Everyone is on high alert when it comes to bio-security methods”.
The virus frequently causes poultry to lose control of the flock and rapidly spreads. The only way to control the disease is to overpopulate all affected and exposed hens or turkeys, which is the only way to do so without a remedy.
The bird flu has been identified in 48 says since 2022, killing 107 million species, according to research.
Avian fever and California chicken
Hardest reach in , California , are chicken producers in the , San Joaquin Valley, home to two of the country’s largest chicken manufacturers,  , Foster Farms , in , Livingston , and , Pitman Farms , in , Sanger.
On Friday, business official Mattos said those who had been affected by the animal flue have suffered substantial losses despite the company’s representatives unavailable for comment.
One of the largest depopulations just took place in , Kern County , where 2.1 million chicken pieces were destroyed. On Thursday, state officials confirmed animal fever at a , Fresno County , thailand house with 17, 500 species and in , Merced County , with 53, 200 birds.
According to Mattos, chicken producers are putting in a number of biosecurity measures to stop the spread of the virus, including restricting access to their fields, sanitizing common areas, and wearing personal protective equipment.
Preventing wild animals from gathering near poultry farms is a much more difficult task to manage.  , Migratory birds are common ships of the animal flu , and could be spreading the virus as they migrate from , Canada , to Central and , South America.
” There are birds outside these time”, Mattos said” We had an epidemic at a farmer house in , Oakdale , with everything around the house. You ca n’t go in without showering or leave without showering. There was still an outbreak, but that is about when bio-secure as you can get.
Diseases at cheese fields
According to experts in dairy products, the number of attacks in the sector will probably increase until the state’s dairy farms are completely infected.
” There are many factors affecting the price of this cancer’s spread, all of which, undoubtedly, is the large number of dairies in close proximity to one another”, said Dr.  , Michael Payne, a dairy researcher and instructor at the , UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. ” Additional problems” include the fact that a sick calf can shed the virus two weeks before she even displays symptoms. Additionally, there is no known effective vaccination for the condition, which is hopefully going to change.
Payne added that , California , has dedicated a substantial amount of fiscal and staff resources to identifying afflicted animals in real-time.
” We’re finding more afflicted animals merely because we are looking harder”, Payne said.
Unlike chicken, the avian flu is not usually destructive to dairy cattle. The cattle is cut from the rest of the cattle if she becomes infected after about two weeks of recovery. Cows that are ill typically experience listless episodes and less milk production.
People instances of H5N1 avian flu
Lactose employees are also becoming victims of the disease. The number of confirmed cases in , California , stands at 26 with the latest event being in , Fresno County.  , Madera County , health authorities identified two circumstances on , Nov. 14. One circumstance was confirmed, the other is presumed good.
Symptoms in humans include cool and flu-like indicators including infection, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, constipation, vomiting, muscle or body pains.
The Fresno County Department of Public Health , recommends all residents, mainly employees at risk for exposure to bird flu, receive the annual flu and COVID-19 vaccination.
According to health officials from Fresno County,” The annual flu vaccine can reduce the risk of being infected with both malware at once and reduce the risk of severe disease from seasonal flu,” according to .
