Jim VandeHei, CEO and co-founder of Axios, delivered a fiery statement at the National Press Club last year, criticising Elon Musk’s claim that” member editors” have replaced conventional media.
VandeHei strongly defended the part of professional news, calling Musk’s state “bulls **t”.
In his address, VandeHei emphasized the value of freedom of expression and clarity in upholding democracy, highlighting the diligence required to produce accurate reports from tough situations.

VandeHei lamented Musk’s claim that people could exchange professional journalists with violet checkmarks and social media accounts. Comparing news to surgery, he argued that experience and commitment were essential.
He said,” Looking at your head and saying you have a brain makes me a neurosurgeon” and having a Twitter handle and 300 words of cleverness does n’t make you a reporter anymore.
In response to VandeHei’s censure, Musk dismissed it with a usually sarcastic comment on X:” Yeah, whatever lmao. You then control the internet. And it is well-known.
Musk, known for his provocative statements, recently encouraged users on X ( formerly Twitter ) to embrace citizen journalism, declaring,” You are the media now”.
