WASHINGTON: Donald Trump on Tuesday named Jamieson Greer his trade minister, a vital figure in implementing the president-elect’s economic agenda, especially his ideas to use taxes to increase profits and help bring more production to US shores.
Kevin Hassett, a former part of his first leadership, is now in charge of the White House National Economic Council, which is also named by Trump as his major financial advisor. Hassett is set to help improve Trump’s plans to, ranging from tax breaks to widening power generation.
According to Trump of Greer, who was US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer’s chief of staff,” Jamieson played a key role in imposing tariffs on China and others to combat unfair trade practices” during Trump’s first term.
He even cited Greer’s practice in facilitating a trade agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Greer is a partner at rules company King &, Spalding.
During Trump’s first word from 2017 to 2021, the United States introduced taxes on billions of dollars value of imports– somewhat on China but even America’s allies.
As Washington and Beijing engaged in an escalating tariff war, the Trump administration specifically imposed levies on some$ 300 billion worth of Chinese goods.
In his efforts to change Beijing’s economic plans, Lighthizer emerged as a strong player in business negotiations.
If confirmed by the Senate, Greer, who is viewed as Lighthizer’s student, may be charged with rolling out Trump’s tax legislation and negotiating trade talks.
Manufacturing gain
Trump on Tuesday lauded Greer’s initiatives under Lighthizer, saying this helped provide manufacturing employment back to America.
As US Trade Representative, Greer is set to work on bringing in the government’s business gap, protecting American companies and widening trade industry, Trump added.
Trump has pledged to impose steep tariffs on both its allies and adversaries, as well as a steeper tariff on China.
He said he was trying to raise government revenue and target nations that he said have been “ripping us off,” while encouraging businesses to restock their products.
Trump has threatened to launch his presidency with an immediate trade war with China, Mexico, and Canada before taking office in January.
It remains unclear what role Lighthizer might assume in Trump’s second term, but he is expected to remain influential within the president-elect’s orbit.
Greer’s earlier role at the USTR’s office means he was involved in Washington’s decisions to impose tariffs on Beijing in Trump’s first term, and come to a” Phase One” trade deal in 2020.
The deal marked a truce in the trade war between the world’s two biggest economies.
China has yet to fulfill its commitments to increase American product and service purchases over the years 2020 and 2021 as the world battled the Covid-19 pandemic.
