The International Criminal Court ( ICC ) chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, on Wednesday requested judges to issue an arrest warrant for Myanmar’s military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, over alleged crimes against the Rohingya Muslim minority.
Senior General Hlaing is accused of committing crimes against humanity, including imprisonment and harassment, which forced almost a million Rohingya to escape to Bangladesh. The Rohingya migration has been frequently described as ethnic cleansing, involving large murders, rapes, and the death of houses.
Speaking from a refugee camp in Bangladesh, Khan said,” In doing so, we will be demonstrating, together with all our companions, that the Rohingya have not been forgotten. That they, like all people around the world, are entitled to the safety of the law”.
The ICC counsel also announced that it would soon request additional arrest warrants for another Myanmar leaders.
In a revolution in 2021, Hlaing seized control of Aung San Suu Kyi’s office.
