It used to be’ one of the largest ‘ gender studies agencies in the country, according to the school
The University of California Santa Cruz’s Feminist Studies Department plans to shut down after 50 times, it announced this year.
The department’s website stated on Sunday that “feminist studies will always have a house at UCSC, but the latest office development has proven to be insufficient and untenable for providing a flexible space for academic exchange and connection.”
According to the announcement, the faculty just voted to close the division as of the end of the current academic year. But, UCSC still plans to offer a female studies level, it stated.
The instructors at UCSC have made the difficult decision to leave administrative status, the statement reads.
The department’s website lists itself as “one of the largest sections in the United States with a focus on gender and sexuality research.”
Over the past few years, however, instructors have been leaving for various universities and “other interests”, according to the news this year.
The remaining instructors are under tremendous strain, according to the statement,” This reduced capability has made it difficult to maintain a strong education.”
In a later statement published Monday, the school stated: “UC Santa Cruz university remain committed to investigating how sex impacts our earth and forms social, political, and cultural structures. However, this new development is an extension of fresh directions in female studies on our campus, no a default”.
The news of X caused sorrow in the minds of professors and faculty.
” As an student, I’m in disbelief”, Alice Malmberg, a political science Ph. D. member at UC Davis, wrote. This department’s inclusion in the first/most significant gender studies sends a bad message about the arts in higher education, even in blue states like California.
” The Female Studies Department at @UCSC completely changed my life,” I assure you, not rhetoric. Deeply saddened by the media that it is closing!!”! alumna Maya Novak-Herzog, a Ph. D. prospect at Northwestern University, wrote.
This hints at the start of bad things to come, I believe. Particularly given that it is taking place at UC Santa Cruz, according to Cal Poly Pomona anthropology doctor Philippe Duhart.
However, a Kansas school also plans to shut down its women’s research section. Wichita State University announced the selection this summers, citing consistently lower student involvement, The College Fix reported.
