According to the International Organization of Vine and Wine ( OIV ), global wine production is projected to decline to its lowest level in more than six decades. The main causes of this decline are climate change’s results.
The OIV estimates 2024’s full wine output to be between 227 million and 235 million hectoliters. This information comes from 29 places which represent 85 % of international wine production. A mid-range 231 million hectoliter figure represents a 2 % decrease from 2023 and a 13 % decrease from the previous ten years ‘ average.
The OIV stated in its statement that” atmospheric challenges across both hemispheres are once again significant contributors to the decreased global output volume.” The business emphasized the influence of sub-zero temperatures in crucial wine regions.
” As with 2023, extreme or unusual weather events are the important influence on global manufacturing, with early frosts, large rainfall, and protracted drought dramatically impacting vineyard productivity”.
France, the largest wine maker in 2023, is projected to experience a major 23 % increases in production. Italy’s manufacturing has substantially increased from last year, but it is now expected to surpass France as the leading producer.
The upward tendency had some positive instances, according to the OIV. ” Just a small cluster of regions– notably the United States and some Eastern European countries including Hungary, Georgia, and Moldova– enjoyed more advantageous atmospheric conditions, achieving average or above-average production volumes”.
