Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, and Donald Trump, the president-elect, met at his Mar-a-Lago property for supper on Friday in Florida. Following Trump’s statement to impose tariffs of up to 25 % on Canadian goods, the meeting took place.
After Canada and Mexico’s efforts to address Trump’s business threats for a week, the visit was unexpected. Authorities have warned that US customers may also be impacted by the taxes.
Trudeau is the first G7 leader to join Trump since November 5 vote.
The breakfast included Trudeau, Trump, and some people of Trump’s proposed management. Trump threatened to impose tariffs on important US trading partners on January 20th, his first day in office, in a Monday article on his social media platform Truth Social, which prompted the appointment.
In his blog, Trump wrote,” As everyone is conscious, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Pharmaceuticals at degrees never seen before. This tariff will continue in effect until Fentanyl and all other improper aliens stop this country’s invasion,”!
The taxes, which would be paid by buyers, are likely to lead to higher prices for consumers in US. Authorities in both Canada and Mexico as well as the US are concerned about this. Trump even mentioned a 10 % import price.
Biden warned exact time that Trump’s tax threats had “screw up” Washington’s ties with Ottawa and Mexico City.
” I think it’s a destructive thing to do”, Biden told reporters.
Canada is the largest trading partner of the United States, exporting$ 423 billion billion worth of goods and services, or 78 per cent of its overall exports, to the US in 2023.
Earlier on Friday, Trudeau said Trump’s challenges should be taken seriously. ” Donald Trump, when he makes remarks like that, he plans on carrying them out. There’s no question about that”, Trudeau told investigators.
He continued,” Our duty is to point out that in this manner, he had really not be harming Canadians who collaborate so well with the United States.” He would really raise taxes on Americans and hurt American businesses and industries as well.
