BANGKOK: Thailand protested an affair involving Myanmar’s military firing on Thai fishing vessels, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on Sunday, after one man drowned, two were injured and lots were detained from one of the ships.
When Myanmar’s military opened fire on the fishing vessels on Saturday, Shinawatra objected to says that they had entered their territorial waters.
Two of 15 Thai fishing vessels were shot on earlier in Myanmar’s territorial waters, close to Ranong, in the province of South Thailand, at a range of 4 to 5 nm ( 7.4 to 1 km ).
” It is inconclusive”, Shinawatra said, when asked by reporters whether Thai fishing boats encroached on Myanmar’s territorial waters.
We do n’t support violence, she said, adding that Thailand was looking for more information and the quick release of four Thai nationals who were one of the 31 fishermen who had been detained.
A phone request for comment was not instantly received by Myanmar’s ruling junta.
Thai Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai demanded a speedy return of the Thai ship and crew who were taken into custody, as well as distinct details about what transpired.
The Myanmar ambassador was summoned for a meeting on Monday to get clarity about what happened and request a rapid discharge of the four Thai citizens, as well as a letter of issue for the event to the Thai government.
Myanmar has experienced an armed uprising since 2021, when the military resurrected, toppling the elected government, and stoking rallies with deadly power.
