Democrats were led by Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA ) to make a public demand on Wednesday afternoon outside the United States Capitol to shut down the Adelanto Detention Center in her backyard, just outside of Los Angeles.
” Those detained in have shared disturbing records that have been corroborated time and time again by famous monitoring from non-profits, press, federal and state governments, and even ICE officers themselves”, Chu said in prepared notes.
Chu blasted GEO Group, a secret government company, for failing to meet government-imposed maintenance standards for “years” and beckoned the Biden administration to ultimately take action and near this special detention facility, one of many across the country.
Adelanto has long been one of the detention facilities where sexual and physical abuse allegations have been reported to ICE’s monitoring range, according to Chu. ” The details are out there, the alarm rings have been continuously rung, and still Adelanto’s doors remain available”.
GEO Group’s rep did not respond to a request for comment.
Chu’s appeal comes at a time when Adelanto is said to be in consideration for closure by ICE.
Last year, press reviews indicated that ICE had self-imposed a Dec. 19, 2023, date to determine whether to shut down the center. It did not arrive at a selection, so it moved the timeframe two weeks later.
Chu expressed her concern in particular because the GEO Group’s agreement guarantees that the hospital will remain open through 2029, which is mainly concerning.

” These presentations take combined information, and this much is obvious: If ICE decide to keep Adelanto available, GEO Group can continue its harmful reign”, Chu said. All of these circumstances are the reason why my coworkers and I have been calling for the closure of the Adelanto ICE Processing Center for almost ten years.
Another progressive House Democrats backed Chu, who has recently called for the end of ICE, claiming that its congressionally mandate hurts immigrants.
