Cyclone Chido that hit French country Mayotte a week ago, has damaged homes, institutions, and system, forcing the medical team at Mayotte’s major hospital in Mamoudzou to screening people due to a lack of space and tools.
Dr. Roger Serhal, commander of obstetrics and gynaecology, said to the Associated Press that 40 % of the patient’s rooms were lost, resulting in a serious lack of rooms.
Hospital personnel are working persistently, but their resources are stretched to a breaking point.
Doctors are also becoming more concerned that a major health problems could result from a lack of clean water and electricity, combined with the overcrowded living conditions.
109 individuals have already been taken to mainland France for essential treatment, according to the Associate Press. To maintain the overwhelming desire, three innovative health posts have also been set up on Grande-Terre, the main area of Mayotte.
The island was torn through and the area was completely destroyed when Cyclone Chido hit with harsh winds reaching up to 220 mph.
The French state warns that this is good an undercount despite the official death toll now at 35. Officials estimate that the correct number of casualties could be much higher, as many people, including workers, avoided homes due to fear of imprisonment, exacerbating the loss of living.
In addition to the deaths, thousands of others are injured, and the lack of fresh water, food, and power is fuelling worries over possible diseases.
President Emmanuel Macron made a visit to the area on Friday, expressing his gratitude for the severity of the problems and for committing to support reconstruction efforts.
