As support for his own Liberal Party continues to decline, French Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is being increasingly under pressure to step over. On Sunday, past allies spoke up, saying some Democratic Members now believe it’s time for him to retire.
The conflict comes as a result of Chrystia Freeland, a key figure in Trudeau’s administration for almost ten years ,’s sudden departure. Apparently, Freeland and Trudeau argued over US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose 25 % tariffs on Canadian exports. Her withdrawal has sparked more party-wide condemnation.
Chandra Arya, an MP from Ottawa, told CBC on Sunday,” A majority of the conference thinks it is time for the perfect minister to move aside”. More than 50 of the 75 Members reportedly said they no longer support Trudeau at a conference of Democratic MPs from Ontario on Saturday.
Anthony Housefather, an MP from Quebec, even called for Trudeau to depart, saying,” The prime minister needs to go. We’re in an impossible position if he stays”. Housefather cautioned that if Trudeau were to win the election, the group would suffer significant losses.
Trudeau is officially meeting with experts to determine what to do next. Some people believe that the next election could take place much sooner than the one in October 2025, despite the scheduled date. On Friday, Trudeau made an effort to reshuffle a second of his case in an effort to handle criticism.
Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the New Democratic Party ( NDP ), made an additional pressure on Friday by revealing that his party would support efforts to overthrow Trudeau’s minority government early in the year. This is a shift from the NDP’s earlier opposition to non-confidence vote.
If another non-confidence ballot is held, the NDP’s assistance may possibly lead to the president’s decline.
Trudeau, who led the Democrats to vote victories in 2015, 2019, and 2021, is now trailing Liberal leader Pierre Poilievre by 20 factors in common opinion polls.
