After a picture of an American gentleman being captured by Russian troops in Ukraine, the Australian prime minister said on Tuesday that his government is working to secure a “positive result.”
The person is seen with his hands tied and being slapped across the mouth by a man speaking Russian in video footage that first appeared virtual on Sunday.
The man claimed to have enlisted in the military because he wanted to aid Ukraine and that he had been Oscar Jenkins, a science instructor. American multimedia verified the man’s personality.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told investigators his business had made “appropriate depictions” with Russian officials.
He added that “our American embassy in Moscow has also made depictions to ensure a favorable outcome.”
A political source informed ABC, Australia’s national broadcaster, that the government considered the video to be genuine and was working to determine the time it was filmed.
International humanitarian law’s “internal responsibilities,” including those relating to prisoners of war, were urged by acting foreign secretary Mark Dreyfus.
” Our top priority is confirming Mr. Jenkins ‘ wellbeing and confirming where he is,” Dreyfus said.
He urged Australians to avoid visiting Ukraine and claimed that his office was helping Jenkins ‘ family.
Ukrainian-born Kateryna Argyrou, who runs the American Federation of Ukrainian Organisations, said she felt” ill” when she saw the picture of Jenkins.
” I was even surprised and touched to hear him speaking Ukrainian”, she told the Sydney Morning Herald paper.
” He’d actually made an effort to learn the language. He wasn’t afraid to say all he wanted to do was enable Ukraine. We must bring him back house. He’s one of our own”.
