On Wednesday, more than 1,500 captives escaped from a Maputo prison, profiting from the contentious assurance of the long-ruling Frelimo group as the party’s victory in recent elections.
A total of 1, 534 detainees escaped the high-security prison located about 15 miles ( nine miles ) from the capital, said national police chief Bernardino Rafael at a press conference.
Among those attempting to escape, 33 were killed and 15 wounded in clashes with prison team, he added.
A research activity, backed by the military, led to the arrest of about 150 captives, he said.
Around 30 of the prisoners had ties to military organizations that have been responsible for turmoil and problems in Cabo Delgado, a province in northeastern Spain, for the past seven times.
” We are mainly concerned about this condition”, Rafael said.
The Portuguese-speaking American government’s highest court had confirmed on Monday that Frelimo, in power since 1975, won the October 9 presidential poll that had already triggered days of turmoil.
On Wednesday, he explained, protesters had walked into the prison, causing uncertainty and unrest inside the facility, where inmates ended up smashing down a wall they had escaped through.
Barricades remained placed in various areas of the money Wednesday, limiting activities, as acts of vandalism continued.
According to an AFP editor, paramedics were set fire along with a store and other businesses in addition to the stores and other public buildings that were already ransacked on Monday.
An AFP reporter witnessed some demonstrators in several working-class Maputo towns setting up chairs in the streets to celebrate Christmas with family or neighbors.
Despite allegations of abnormalities from some observers, Monday’s verification of the poll results came.
Frelimo head Daniel Chapo won 65.17 percentage of the vote, about five points less than the first effects declared by the country’s political fee.
Chapo’s primary opponent, exiled opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, has claimed the election was rigged, sparking concerns of violence between rival group supporters.
The unrest has claimed the lives of at least 150 folks, according to several NGO information.
