” Silent Night, holy evening, all is quiet, all is beautiful, round yon Virgin, Mother and Child, sacred infant so soft and gentle. Sleep in mighty peacefulness”. The Christmas hymn” Silent Night”, or” Stille Nacht”, retells the Gospel story of Jesus Christ’s birth in the Holy Land. But where did this music originate?

” Silent Night” is now one of the most favorite Christmas songs. In terms of profits, Bing Crosby’s version of it ranked as the second most popular Christmas song always as of 2019. The hymn was originally published in German as” Stille Nacht,” a young Austrian Catholic priest, despite its current popularity in English. The church musician wrote the sound, and the priest even sang it for the first time in cooperation with the church organist.  ,
Since its initial performance at Mass in 19th-century Austria,” Silent Night” has delighted Christians in numerous languages and has inspired both consumers and worshippers for years.

Fr. is explained in Catholic Review. Josef Mohr was the priest of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Obendorf, Austria, in the year 1816. Europe was undoubtedly appreciative of God for at least a short reprieve from western battle after the Napoleonic Wars had ended. The younger priest composed a six-verse song, which in 1818 he gave to Franz Xavier Gruber, who was the pianist for the cathedral. The process of Gruber was to write the music to accompany the verses and convert them into a hymn that could be sung to guitar accompaniment. That Christmas Eve, during Mass, the song had its humble but ancient album.

Gruber sang guitar while the church choir performed the abstains from each verse. Father Mohr, a brilliant singer himself, played the guitar rhythm. Those who heard the song that day received it cordially.
Father Mohr died in 1848. The artist of” Silent Night” was reportedly quoted as saying that one of his “most treasured events” was when he wrote the Christmas carol.

WRTI 90.1 says that Fr. Mohr had originally composed the lyrics while looking out over the peaceful, snowy town of Obendorf. After the hymn’s first debut, a copy of the song was taken by an organ builder/repair man to his own town. There, traveling folk singers got a hold of it, and by 1834 it was already so widely disseminated that it was being performed for the King of Prussia. The hymn debuted across the ocean in New York in 1839. Below you can listen to a beautiful rendition of “Stille Nacht” in its original language, sung by German Werner Klemperer and Austrian John Banner (famous for their roles on the TV series “Hogan’s Heroes”).

As an interesting historical background, Klemperer and his Jewish parents emigrated from Germany in the 1930s, and Banner, a Jew, escaped Nazi Germany and Austria. The French singers Robert Clary and Banner, who sing the following Christmas song in the video, were Jews who lost a significant portion of their culture to the Holocaust. In fact, Clary was himself imprisoned at Auschwitz, and she managed to survive and have an acting career in pleasure in America. These three men rebuilt a new life in America while still maintaining their faith in God as they endured the horrors of Nazi large death. Bing Crosby even appears in the video clip, playing the guitar that Fr. Fr. first used to play” Silent Night” on. Mohr but many years earlier!
