German interior minister Nancy Faeser urged the far-right Alternative for Germany ( AfD ) not to take advantage of a recent attack on a Christmas market in the city of Magdeburg.
When a car was driven through audiences at the city’s Christmas business in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, five people were killed and over 200 were hurt.
What did Faeser claim?
In remarks made to the Funke Media Group, a major publication of German newspapers and magazines, Faeser remarked,” To the AfD, I may just say: Any attempt to exploit for a bad action and to abuse the anguish of the patients is despicable.”
” It just shows the figure of those who do like things”, she said.
On Monday, the AfD held a protest in Magdeburg. Authorities said it was attended by some 3, 500 individuals.
Soon February will be the start of Germany’s scheduled jump elections. In polling before the election, the AfD generally came in second place, trailing only the moderate CDU/CSU ally.
Referring to the Friday strike, Faeser said,” We are doing everything to understand this work. Our emotions are with their people as we mourn the deceased.
What do we hear about the suspected offender?
The 50-year-old feared offender, identified as Taleb A. *, is in pre-trial confinement.
The man, who is reportedly from Saudi Arabia and has resided in Germany since 2006, is still being looked into by authorities.
The suspect frequently posted comments against Islam and Saudi Arabia on the app X and had supported the AfD.
Germany’s DPA news agency reported that Saudi officials had requested the suspect’s extradition next month.
” Right now, we also have to help the first firefighters and emergency workers, who have gone above and beyond and had terrible experiences,” said Faeser.
