A gunman killed an Oak Park police inspector on Friday night after he was seen leaving a institution, officials said. This was the first police officer’s death in the nearby north district in 86 times.
According to Oak Park police chief Shatonya Johnson, Detective Allan Reddins, a five-year senior of the department, was shot in his left side soon after 9 a.m. when he was responding to a call about a person who had been seen leaving a Chase Bank unit.
Johnson claimed that Reddins and a number of other responding officers had instructed the think to present his arms, but he instead “brandished a weapons” and opened fire.
Reddins, 40, was transported to Loyola University Medical Center in critical situation and died of his wounds at about 10: 10 a. m., Johnson said.
” We’re hurting right now”, Johnson said at a news conference Friday night. ” I’m hurting. His home is hurting”.
The suspect was shot in the foot during the altercation, according to police, and was treated at the picture before being taken to Maywood’s Loyola University Medical Center, where he was being held Friday evening.
Johnson claimed that the exploration was continued, and that she had no concerns about the shooting’s circumstances. Asked for more details about the alleged shooter, Johnson said she didn’t want to give him any more “air time” on the news.
Reddins, of Chicago, joined the Oak Park power in 2019 after a stay with Metra officers and immediately established himself as a “natural head”, Johnson said. She said that he was promoted to studies in 2022 and that he had successfully solved a number of significant cases while working as a policeman.
” He would often take the extra step to say’ what more,’ and that is great”, the chief said. I anticipated his lieutenant status and that he would make a fantastic niche training officer as well.
Reddins was a “devoted home man” and leaves behind his mother and siblings and a 19-year-old brother, Johnson said.
Johnson, who described Reddins ‘ son as” a bright young man with a bright future ahead of him,” said,” We had so many conversations about his mother.”
Reddins ‘ passing was the Oak Park Police Department’s first fatal accident since 1938. She said the 86-member power was “in mourning”.
Johnson noted that Reddins ‘ family was picked up and driven to the hospital by a sergeant who was able to assist her with a “very close-knit police department,” adding that some officers who were at home celebrating the holiday also showed up.
” He had a total society there at the hospital”, Johnson said. We “arm around each other.” … This is the worst day for any chief of police”.
Johnson added that she’d heard from leaders of different local agencies offering condolences and guidance, including Chicago authorities Superintendent Larry Snelling.
Dead details may be posted on the website for Oak Park Village, according to Johnson.
