It’s about as horrible as you can imagine to read a report from the Israeli Health Ministry that details the horrifying conditions that captives in Gaza have been held in by their Hamas captors. Israel intends to make the statement available to the UN this year. The information was gathered from interviews with the staff who treated many of the victims who were released in overdue November 2023, and in other ways. Men, women, and children were all subjected to both physical and psychological abuse through actions like sexual abuse, hunger, brand, water poverty, withholding necessary medical care, locks pulling, beatings, and several other means of abuse.  ,
They were given for poor-quality foods when they weren’t getting enough of them, leading doctors to speculate that some of the kids might have long-term development and wellness issues. Additionally, the lack of nutrition contributed to health issues like refeeding syndrome, a condition that frequently occurs as a result of a person’s eating fast after a period of malnutrition that can cause a dangerous electrolyte imbalance, and sarcopenia, a condition that is frequently associated with age. Some lost up to 18 % of their body weight.  ,
According to the Times of Israel, youngsters were forced to undress, molested by prisoners, and made to perform physical works on each other. They even had their vagina whipped. Women of all ages, including adolescents, were also forced to undress, and some say they were bound to rooms and watched by their captors. Some claim that their prisoners sexually assaulted them.  ,

Some of the victims, including kids, returned with injuries and burns where they were branded with cooled things. Some of the scalp that their prisoners had pulled out was missing.  ,
People report that they were denied entry to a bathroom and health care because of their injuries or illnesses. According to the Jerusalem Post, at least one captive perished as a result of a medical condition that was not treated. Older victims, who were bound and unable to walk, developed serious vascular thrombosis.  ,
Many of these hostages still require continuous medical care despite their release after about two months of captivity, while others have experienced severe psychological issues brought on by the suffering. Some reported problems like sleeping poverty, recurring flashbacks, survivor’s grief, and derealization. Even worse, some of them who came back to find that their houses had been destroyed or that their friends and families had been murdered by Hamas had no one to help them as they struggled to recover.  ,
Andrey Kozlov revealed to CNN earlier this year how much physical and psychological abuse he had to endure while imprisoned in Gaza for eight weeks. He said punishments were” creative” and arbitrary. For instance, he was made to exist in the sun on a popular time while being punished for washing his hands before eating. Kozlov resisted revealing some of what he saw and claimed that he received far better treatment than some of the other hostages he encountered while in prison.  ,  ,  ,

Despite these gruesome details provided by the hostages and their care providers, Reuters reports that” Hamas has repeatedly denied abuse of the 251 hostages abducted from Israel during its Oct. 7, 2023 assault” . ,
Israel claims that 62 captives who are still in Gaza prison are still intact, according to the Washington Post.  ,  ,
