From USA. state:  ,
The U. S. Constitution and the National Succession Act of 1947 describe the political order of succession. The inheritance of government soldiers takes place in the same way that their organizations were established.
- Vice President
- Speaker of the House
- Senate President Pro Tempore
- Secretary of State

Finally, we all learned about that in class (unless you were one of the unfortunate young folks who were subjected to Common Core ). Luckily, the U. S. line of succession has not gone past the level of evil president. If all goes according to plan, the House did choose a speech on Jan. 3, the vote will be certified on Jan. 6, and Donald Trump and JD Vance did been sworn in on Jan. 20, 2025.  ,
What if things don’t go as planned and the House is forced to fight for a long time to choose a new speech? We might be considering a distant possibility that Senate President Pro Tempore Chuck Grassley will become the acting president of the United States.  ,
If you’re wondering why President-elect Trump came out with a ringing support of Mike Johnson now, this could very well be the cause.  ,
The problem is the schedule. On January 6 a joint session of Congress is scheduled to confirm the vote of 2024. If there’s no House Speaker, there may not be a ballot. If there is no documentation, Trump may be inaugurated as leader. Without that critical ceremonial vote, JD Vance cannot be sworn in. The House may have no speech until the House, which has a sizable Republican majority, may resolve issues before taking over the administration.  ,

Crazy, straight? It would be the cherry on top of the mad 2024 vote.
My Townhall partner Katie Pavlich explained:  ,
However, the gap between January 6 and January 20 is just two days. President-elect Donald Trump and vice-president-elect JD Vance don’t assume office if the House is unable to get a speaker in time to confirm the election results.  ,
With a non-functioning House, Trump, Vance and the House Speaker are out of the chain-of-command, which puts the Senate pro etiam in as acting president. On January 20, 2025, that will be Republican Senator Chuck Grassley.  ,
On January 6, the speaker will have two formal responsibilities: directing the House debates over the certification and selecting two tellers to study the votes.  ,
” The state would be going into one big grey area”, Steve Smith, a teacher of social science and international research at Arizona State University, told Roll Call. The House elects the speech as its first action when there is one precedent that is distinct and could influence what happens.
” Until the listener is elected, nothing more happens.” It’s been that way since 1789 when the first Congress convened”, Smith said. ” Now, that worked just fine for the first Congress. But that might be difficult here.”

More from Roll Call:  ,
While there is no law in U. S. story to link House people through such a situation, they probably have the power to, as Smith put it, “make up a law”.
And he claimed that if that were required, there would be a compromise in which case the clerk do set up the House and also allow for the start of the January 6 count, “or neither speaker.”
According to Derek Muller, a professor at the University of Notre Dame Law School, the Constitution enables the House to organize itself, giving users unheard of constitutional sway.
According to Muller,” they may elect an speaking or transitory speaker with the condition that the whole House would review the issue of a lasting speaker in X-number of days.”  ,
The best-case situation would be for Democrats to choose a speech on January 3 and be concerned about command disputes after Trump and Vance are seated. However, with such a slender majority in the House, the room may find a way to connect behind Johnson ( or someone else ) without pause. Now, Rep. Thomas Massie has said he will never vote for Johnson, which means he can only afford to lose one more vote to prevent another carnival. Remember that Kevin McCarthy’s replacement was chosen after three days. Republicans in America, in fact, cannot afford a drawn-out speech debate at this time, which is good why Trump is pushing for a quick vote to elect Johnson.  ,
