An investigation into the city’s officers is being launched by a sign posted in a Mexican town thanking a drug prince for giving children holiday presents. Drug cartels try to improve their reputation and gain native support by handing out items to kids or food bags to the citizens around the holidays, according to AP News. Local aid that cartels want from the government includes being warned of military raids and extorting safety cash from residents.
AP News accounts:
” Videos posted on social media last week from the city of Coalcoman, in the eastern state of Michoacan, showed a signal at a Christmas good thanking Jalisco gang head Nemesio Oseguera, better known by his nickname ‘ El Mencho,’ for the gifts.
‘ The children of Coalcoman congratulate Mr. Nemesio Oseguera and his children, 2, 3, and Delta 1, for their noble gesture. Bless for your gifts,’ the signal read”.
Although it is not yet known how local authorities were or were aware of the text, community groups frequently organize fairs like these.
Local officials in the city of Mexico are being looked into for any possible connections to the signal thanking the drug lord, according to Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday.
” Naturally we condemn these indications”, Sheinbaum said. A criminal organization is unable to hold a public occasion to encourage the popularity of violence.
It’s reported that it’s not uncommon to see evidence touting the Jalisco cartel’s dominance in Michoacan. According to reports, the drug group started organizing villagers to” as human spears against military troops” in 2021.
The gang attacked their foes with roadside bombs and bomb-dropping drones, according to AP News, while also providing playgrounds for the local children. They also donated hoops. Additionally, the cartels have compelled some nearby residents to stage demonstrations against army operations.
The Mexican government has reportedly had a policy of leaving the job of dealing with the cartels to local officials, which has resulted in the distribution of a portion of the municipal budget to the local gangs. However, the government is currently reportedly looking into the “holiday cheer” spread by the cartel.
