Pakistan’s national nuclear energy governmental agency issued the necessary permits, and the country will soon be able to construct its largest nuclear power plant.
The largest nuclear electricity generation plant in the country, Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit 5 (C-5 ), a facility with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts electric ( MWe ), has been granted the license by the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority ( PNRA ) for the facility.
The PNRA confirmed that the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission ( PAEC ) had applied for the licence earlier this year, submitting the Preliminary Safety Assessment Report and documentation covering nuclear safety, radiation protection, emergency preparedness, waste management, and nuclear security.
C-5 is a cutting-edge, third-generation pressurized water furnace created by Chinese company Hualong. The flower incorporates active and passive safety features, including a double-shell isolation architecture and a reactor-filtered releasing program.
The C-5 nuclear power plant in Pakistan is the second to have this cutting-edge architecture and has a lifespan of 60 years. Similar to the specifications of Units 2 and 3, the Karachi Nuclear Power Plants are now functional and providing for the national grid.
The National Economic Council’s executive committee has approved the construction of C-5, and it is expected to cost$ 3.7 billion. When operating, the plant will boost Pakistan’s atomic energy capacity, which now stands at around 3, 530 MW, accounting for about 27 percent of the country’s entire electricity generation.
