New Year’s Eve, Classic Hollywood Style

Whether we celebrate New Year’s at a chaotic group, a packed outdoor stadium, a church, or at home, everyone of us wants to” start the New Year best”. Two of my favorite images from traditional Hollywood movies can sometimes make you smile from your couch or make you feel inspired as you head out to a group.

America has changed a bit since my parents and their other members of the Greatest Generation were younger, but some things remain constant: for example, music, lips, glamorous clothes, loud celebrations, and half-drunk group guests on New Year’s Eve. Just take a look at the two videos below, which feature David Niven and Bing Crosby, two of my favorite actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Traditional Hollywood was prepared for the sluggish start of nightfall on January 1, whether the stars were serving food to a swollen crowd in Times Square or serving meals in a New England home.

In the movie” Holiday Inn” ( 1942 ), Crosby’s character is running an inn that will only welcome guests and provide entertainment on holidays. Although the evening takes an odd turn for him when his newly solitary and very drunk dance friend ( played by Fred Astaire ) shows up and partially steals his lady, he is eager for his great beginning on New Year’s Eve! &nbsp,

Both Bing’s performing and Fred’s dance are amazing, and Marjorie Reynolds does her promote to make the scene wonderful.

And this clip also includes the New Year’s Eve celebration at the end of the film, when all the passionate misunderstandings are finally resolved. The New Year’s piece begins around 3: 52, but the whole picture is worth watching, since we’re also in the middle of the Twelve Time of Christmas:

The New Year’s scene in” Bachelor Mother” ( 1939 ) is a different approach to the holiday. The young woman who is trying to help an abandoned child accidentally ends up being accused of being the mother’s mother is played by Ginger Rogers as the out-of-work girl. When she finally consents to adopting the child, she is later hired back by the store’s son ( David Niven ) and made to be his New Year’s Eve date. &nbsp,

After tricking other partygoers by pretending Ginger didn’t speak English, the pair ends up having a romantic night that includes a party in Times Square to celebrate the new year.

I don’t know what better way to wrap up this small, rambling piece than to use the lyrics to the song Crosby croons above. They’re a bit cheesy, but I loved it when my father sang the music, because the lyrics are full of the sentiment, passion, and desire that all of us like to experience heading into a New Year’s Eve. &nbsp,
