Syria’s new authority has appointed Maysaa Sabrine, the original lieutenant governor of the Arab central banks, as its new government. Sabrine, who has spent years overseeing the war-torn government’s banking business, becomes the first woman to lead the organisation in its 70-year record, according to a top Arab standard.
Mohammed Issam Hazime, who was replaced by Bashar al-Assad in 2021 and remained in his place after his ouster on December 8 was overshadowed by a dissident rude, is now in charge.
The central bank has implemented measures to lessen state control over the economy, including removing the requirement for pre-approvals for imports and exports and loosing restrictions on foreign currency usage. But, Syria and its central banks continue to face stringent US sanctions.
In the wake of Assad’s withdrawal and a brief period of stealing, during which Arab money was stolen but the primary vaults remained stable, the lender has also reviewed the government’s assets.
The vault apparently contains nearly 26 tons of gold, which is the same amount it held at the start of Syria’s legal battle in 2011. However, foreign currency reserves have sharply declined from around$ 18 billion before the war to roughly$ 200 million, Reuters reported.
