On Monday, about one year after a terrorist reportedly inspired by the Islamic State group allegedly rammed through one of the city’s renowned entertainment districts on New Year’s Time, President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden may travel to New Orleans.
A Friday statement from the White House reads,” The President and First Lady will grieve with the families and community members impacted by the tragic attack on January 1 , and meet with officials on the ground.”
The trip is scheduled to take place on the final anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U. S. Capitol before President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated for his second term on Jan. 20.
Since the New Orleans attack’s suspect, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, allegedly drove a rented pick-up truck carrying an Islamic State group flag through Bourbon Street and around a police barricade at around 3 a.m., the death toll has increased to 15 people.
Some of the victims died from bullet wounds, according to reports that Jabbar shot a gun. Jabbar, a U. S. born , Army , veteran from Texas who converted to Islam, died in a shootout with police, which injured two officers. At least 33 other people were hurt in the incident.
Before announcing his judicial appointments at the White House on Thursday, Biden gave an update on the progress being made with the attack investigation.
Biden asserted that there is no proof that anyone else was involved in the attack. Just a few hours before the attacker rammed into the crowd with his car, it has been established that the attacker is the same one who planted the explosives in those ice coolers in two nearby French Quarter locations.
On New Year’s Day, Biden addressed the nation at Camp David, where he discussed the videos Jabbar allegedly uploaded online before the attack in which he reportedly expressed his support for the Islamic State group.
