US President Joe Biden revealed on Thursday that Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the attacker who fatally crashed his pickup truck into a crowd on New Orleans ‘ Bourbon Street, had a remote detonator in his car to trigger IEDs ( IEDs ) planted in ice coolers. The FBI recovered two IEDs that the perpetrator had placed in ice-cold drinks in two distinct locations in the European Quarter.
Biden defended the connection between the IEDs and the car attack, saying,” They’ve established that the perpetrator is the same man who planted the explosives in those snow cooler in two adjacent areas in the French Quarter just a few days before he rammed into the crowd with his vehicle. They determined that he had a distant explosive in his car that would detonate those two snow chests.
After engaging in gunfire with authorities, Jabbar was shot and killed. The FBI has said that Jabbar was” 100 % inspired by Isis”. Biden’s earlier statements before the invasion, where he often argued that white dominance posed the greatest threat to the nation, made the case that actually terrorist organizations like Isis were less hazardous than white supremacists, have since resurfaced in public consciousness.
White supremacy’s “most deadly hazard” is a statement.
White supremacy is the most harmful extremist threat the United States, according to Biden. In 2021, he repeated this claim half. First, during his State of the Union address, he said,” We didn’t disregard what our brains authorities have determined to be the most lethal terrorist threat to the country now: White supremacy is terrorism”.
Weeks afterwards, while commemorating the Tulsa Race Massacre jubilee in June, Biden reiterated his judgment. The intelligence group claims that pale supremacy-related terrorism poses the greatest threat to the nation today. No ISIS, no al Qaeda — White supremacists”, he said.
White supremacy is the second most dangerous criminal risk, according to the statement.
In his 2023 commencement speech at Howard University, Biden also referred to white power as a major home terrorist threat.
” White supremacy … is the second most dangerous extremist threat in our homeland”, Biden said. And I’m not just saying this because I attend a Black HBCU, I say it. Wherever I go, I say this.
Attorney president’s support for Biden’s watch
Biden’s earlier remarks on white power have been echoed by his presidency. In May 2021, attorney general Merrick Garland told the Senate Appropriations Committee that the FBI views violent fanatics who are racially or ethnically determined, especially those who support white power, as the biggest domestic danger.
According to the FBI, the top domestic violent extremist threat comes from “racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists, particularly those who advocated for the supremacy of the white competition,” Garland said.
White nationalists were another problem in 2021, according to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Garland and Biden administration officials claimed at the time that the Capitol violation on January 6, 2021 by Trump supporters was the start of growing concerns about home threats to politics.
Garland referred to the Capitol invasion as a significant threat to democracy. The conquest of the Capitol, he said,” an attempt to interfere with the important aspect of our republic, a peaceful transfer of power,” and I have not seen a more dangerous threat to democracy than that.
DHS report on white supremacists
A 2020 US department of homeland security ( DHS) report,” Homeland Threat Assessment”, under the Trump administration, identified white supremacists and other domestic violent extremists as the “most persistent and lethal threat” to the United States. DHS secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that the department is taking” a new approach to addressing domestic violent extremism, both internally and externally”, compared to the Trump administration.
New Orleans incident
15 people were killed and dozens hurt when a truck was driven into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early on New Year’s Day. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, allegedly targeted people celebrating the holiday. An Isis flag was found in the vehicle.
The FBI is looking into the terrorist attack. The organization claimed that Isis had “inspired” Jabbar, but they have not found any direct orders from the organization.
Jabbar’s brother, Abdur Jabbar, told The New York Times that his brother converted to Islam from Christianity. He said:” What he did does not represent Islam. This is more some type of radicalization, not religion”.
Following the attack, social media users have criticized President Biden’s earlier statements about white supremacy, saying that they have” not aged well.”
