An Ohio teacher, who stood firm in her refusal to use students ‘ preferred pronouns, has won a$ 450, 000 settlement in a legal battle against her former school district, New York Post reports.
Vivian Geraghty, a middle school language arts teacher, filed the lawsuit in 2022 after she was forced to resign for not following the Jackson Local School District’s verb coverage.
Instead of using their legitimate names, Geraghty was asked to solve two pupils using titles and pronouns that matched their gender identities. Additionally, one pupil requested a shift in the nouns. Geraghty, but, refused, citing her spiritual values and constitutional rights.
By requiring Vivian to personally participate in the social move of her kids, Logan Spena, a lawyer for Alliance Defending Freedom, the organization representing Geraghty, said,” The school tried to force her to take and repeat the university’s view on issues that go the foundation of morality and individual personality, like what makes us male or female.
The teacher’s approach led to her departure, but the legal fight continued. The district’s pronoun policy was” not neutral,” and in August, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio ruled that forcing Geraghty to use the students ‘ preferred names and pronouns constituted” compelled speech.”
According to Spena,” The First Amendment forbids that abuse of power, and Jackson Local School District leaders have learned that comes at a high price.”
