When House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA ) was reelected, some conservatives said they only voted for him because President-elect Donald Trump asked them to.
Trump criticized some of the concessions that were made to the Democrats when he spoke out about last month’s federal money agreement, which prevented a partial national shutdown before the vacations and his own opening. Trump had terrible thoughts for narcissist House liberals, whom he views as genera, in contrast to Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.
After largely letting his surrogates indulge in that kind of discussion about GOP lawmakers holding out on specific Trump nominees, Trump suggested that Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX ) may be subject to a major concern in 2026. The newly elected president-elect made a reminder to lawmakers that he had last month supported a successful primary challenge against Virginia representative Bob Good, former president of the Freedom Caucus.
WHAT TRUMP DID IN THE OVAL OFFICE ON DAY 1
During Trump’s second term as president, he compiled a strongly conservative history. He won a steadfast conservative lot on the Supreme Court, which resulted in the overturn of Roe v. Wade after almost 50 years. Trump also passed the biggest revenue cut in the country since Ronald Reagan.  ,
Trump has always shown a determination to bargain. The most recent data suggest that he would prefer to be the most powerful deal-maker the White House has ever seen to the most conservative president in history. This, far more than philosophy, scheme, or political theory, is central to his individual identity.
Before taking office on January 20, Trump has urged Republicans to abstain from a further battle over the bill ceiling. Contrary to this, Congress’s most powerful governmental conservatives have benefited from the default threat to slash costs that otherwise would not have been inconceivable. Trump has stated that he is available to completely eliminating the debt ceiling, as some progressive Democrats have suggested.
The once and future president defeated a movement conservative, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX ), to win the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. He beat another, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL ), to win it again in 2024. Even Republicans who ended up running somewhat to Trump’s left, or at least flirting with Never Trumpers, had originally intended to run to his right: Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL ) in 2016, who has been nominated to serve as Trump’s secretary of state, and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who served as his first adviser to the UN in 2024.
Trump had already been attacked right away when he won the election in 2017. Liberals questioned the legitimacy of his election after he lost the popular voting to Hillary Clinton. The Trump-Russia research has recently started its course before Election Day. He was on the defense from the very end.
Trump, who had a poor relationship with senior Democrat congressional leaders during the 2016 primaries, was also a relatively newcomer to the GOP power structure. Obamacare repeal and tax cuts were the main legislative priorities he shared with then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY ) and House Speaker Paul Ryan, despite the fact that he had run to the left of many other Republicans on the issue of healthcare. By the time Liberals won the 2018 House majority, they were focused on removing Trump from office two years later.
If Trump had begun his first term working with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT ) on an infrastructure bill, for example, perhaps his first term would have gone differently. In contrast to previous Vice President Mike Pence, Trump’s former companion from four years ago, the populist Ohioan has collaborated with liberal Democrats on nonpartisan policy in the Senate, despite Vice President-elect J. D. Vance being largely a movement conventional himself.
Trump and Democrats had aborted discussions on problems ranging from guns to immigration, but not much progressed from them. He did collaborate with Democrats on significant paying bills during the pandemic.
This time around, Trump has received a gentler welcome. In the popular vote and the Electoral College, he came in back of Vice President Kamala Harris. Progressives generally appear dissatisfied with his resumption of business.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who will be serving in the same capacity as Donald Trump, is familiar with the new president’s style in the Empire State. Schumer initially seemed open to working with Trump, but the Republican’s poor relationship with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA ) made that untenable. Now that Democrats will be barred from office for the next two years, Schumer might want to go over a Trump engagement.
But Trump’s election could be excellent news for Democrats in the 2026 midterm primaries, especially with such a razor-thin Republican majority in the House. After that, Trump may be exempt from serving in office until the following national poll. They might not want to finger Trump and Vance any victories before 2028.
Trump may also have a freer hand with GOP management. McConnell has resigned in favor of Sen. John Thune (R-SD ), and Ryan has long since passed away, with Trump’s handpicked speaker having only recently retained the hand.

” I think it’s a very good, very successful relationship that will be important for the state”, Johnson told the Washington Examiner next year. There will be so much to do and there will need to be a near cooperation between the Republican leader and the House as we enter the first 100 days of the next Congress and the next management.
Whether Liberals will want to be a part of that, also, remains to be seen.
