Focus on inspiring other pro-democracy people to become more energetic instead of tiring with Trump supporters.
A UC Berkeley professor professor who once believed Republicans “dominated” politics according to how they utilize speech, but whose recommendations in that respect have since become staple leftist/Democrat approach, has some New Year’s ideas to assist “defeat the autocratic threat” and “keep democracy dead” during Trump’s next term.
George Lakoff ( pictured ), author of” The Little Blue Book: The Essential Guide to Thinking and Talking Democratic” and co-founder of the progressive Rockridge Institute, certainly makes use of that book’s title in his and journalist/former Kamala Harris Communications Director Gil Durán’s list of resolutions.
” Authoritarian” appears in almost every decision, and scattered around are statements such as “undermine freedom”, “rule of law”, and “fascism”.
As a prologue, Lakoff and Durán go all the way up to 1943 to notice it’s tough to top what Woody Guthrie had offered up:
” Job more and better.
Read lots of good novels.
Keep hoping system running.
Support win war – hit authoritarianism.
Wake up and fight”.
( Get it? The middle of World War II… we’re in a combat … against Nazis! Defeat fascism! )
Here’s some of the artists ‘ proposals:
—” Become brave”. Authoritarians like it when people feel useless, and “fascism feeds on skepticism and pessimism”. So make sure you” to ensure the success of democracy” by doing everything you can.
—” Cultivate empathy”. Authoritarians need “dehumanization, marginalization, and section”, but be certain to “understand other people’s thoughts and ideas”.
—” Get proactive”. Getting involved in one’s community ticks off authoritarians ( there’s that phrase again ), but” show up to rallies and sessions” and donate to organizations that do” important pro-democracy work”. ( If you’re a parent concerned about what’s being taught to your children, however, you might think twice about showing up to speak at a school board meet. )
—” Avoid brain rot and lies” . , Lakoff and Durán are  , really concerned about” clickbait traps”, “false stories” and” conspiracy theories” ( almost as if 2016-2024 never occurred ).
—” Don’t argue with]Trump ] supporters”. Because they’re … possessed or anything. Or, as Lakoff and Durán put it, “at this stage, their support for him is a natural structure in their brains”. Rather, they recommend trying to get more “pro-democracy people” involved in things.
—” Remember: This is a regime” . , Trump, after all, is just a “puppet” of oligarchs like” co-President” Elon Musk. The authors claim that the tide will turn when the British people realize that the nation is being run for the benefit of a few arrogant billionaires.
In a 2003 interview with UC Berkeley News, Lakoff claimed progressives are like a “nurturant parent family” which believes kids are born good, but which ( progressive ) parents can make better. On the other hand, liberals follow a” strict parents design” that views the world as “dangerous”: Kids are inherently poor and must be made good.
Further: The Left is upping the’ persecution’ post even before Trump takes office
