A common California veggie restaurant, Sage Regenerative Kitchen &, Brewery, is closing after 14 times, blaming economic difficulties made worse by reaction from its faithful vegan customers, New York Post reports.
The cafe, with locations in Echo Park and Pasadena, was a favorite for plant-based guests. However, Mollie Engelhart, the company’s user, claimed that adding dairy and meat to the menus this year to entice new customers turned off.
The choice to offer items like buffalo burgers and butter, sourced through restorative farming methods, was intended to coincide with Engelhart’s enthusiasm for sustainable agriculture. ” I thought maybe we could combine these two things, my restaurants and my love for renewable crops, and travel to some fresh pathway”, she told Eater, a digital media company that covers meals and dining in Los Angeles.
The change unhappy Sage’s faithful vegan clients, who felt betrayed. Furious guests flooded Google with one-star reviews. ” Will never eat here now that they serve meat”, one wrote, while another said,” You’ve abandoned your core values and the animals. But disappointing”.
Engelhart and her husband yet sold their house to raise money, despite their efforts to revive the company, Sage had a difficult recovery. When the cafe announced its shutdown on Instagram, the reaction reached a head.
Animal rights team Peta was among the critics, commenting on the final saying,” Serving humane-washed meat, cheese, and eggs under the farce of ‘ renewable gardening’ betrayed animals, the earth, and type customers”.
Some vegans celebrated the shutdown, calling it “karma” for abandoning its origins. One post read,” This is what happens when you betray the pets and your client base.”
