On Sunday, a significant climate method approached the Midwest, bringing heavy snowfall and preventing transportation, and causing severe weather alerts throughout the region.
As the climate system was anticipated to move from the Midwest to the East Coast, according to AFP, American Airlines issued a travel advice for 46 flights from Kansas to New Jersey.
The National Weather Service activated blizzard alerts in Kansas and Missouri, whilst winter storm and ice storm warnings extended to Washington DC on the East Coast, affecting an unprecedented 1, 500-mile (2, 400-kilometre ) region.
As the program moved eastward, a combination of chilling rain, sleet, and snow came to Kansas early on Sunday morning.
The forecast from the NWS predicted more severe conditions in the state, which would include significant snowfall and wind speeds exceeding 40 mph ( 64 kmh ) in the state.
The accumulating storm through Monday would” substantially reduce visibilities, and snowy amounts will surpass 15 inches”– the most considerable in ten years–” which will make travel extremely dangerous, with impassable roads”.
The rain projection for the Central Appalachians and north Missouri ranged between 8 and 14 inches.
The Washington region may experience up to 10 inches of snow from Sunday night into Monday, good causing” significant amounts, hazardous journey and shutdowns”, according to the Washington Post.
According to CNN, nearly 70 million people across the country were under different conditions warnings.
Travel had already been impacted by the first major storm of 2025, with Kansas City International Airport suspending activities on Saturday “due to swift ice concentration.”
According to Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, who confirmed the news via social media, businesses resumed after runway and taxiway care.
The southward-moving jet stream may send temperatures below zero degrees Fahrenheit (-18 degrees Fahrenheit ), with strong breezes increasing the risks.
According to NWS forecasts, temperatures could drop substantially below annual averages to the US Gulf Coast, leading to severe storms across the lower Mississippi Valley.
More risks posed by snow and freezing rain from Kansas to Kentucky and Virginia included potential for icy roads, fallen trees, damaged energy lines, and frequent power outages in cold weather.
The NWS anticipated considerable tree destruction and “long-lasting energy interruptions” from Kansas to the main Appalachian Mountains.
The Eastern region was particularly vulnerable due to a recent, devastating storms that affected several southern states, including Kentucky.
Those areas were also recovering from the storm’s effect.
In an emergency meeting, Kentucky’s governor Andy Beshear stated that the new storm” will probably result in significant disruption and risky conditions on our roads and could result in substantial power outages only 24 hours or so before it’s going to get really cool.”
The governors of Kentucky, Missouri, and Virginia each issued an emergency declaration and posted information on social media to warn people about risky weekend weather.
