On January 6, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation, citing domestic unrest and the recent departure of his financing secretary. However, the Liberal Party is gearing up for its next section, and Trudeau’s departure has been met with a lot of image success.
Social media responds: the image storm
Trudeau’s announcement sparked an avalanche of reactions online, with users on X ( formerly Twitter ) leading the charge. One user hilariously tied Trudeau’s political fate to Donald Trump’s recent re-election as U.S. President, quipping, “Trump’s victory ended Justin Trudeau’s career. Cause and effect, folks!”
Another article included a sports-related comment that made reference to Joel Embiid’s match against the Philadelphia 76ers the same day. The message read,” Justin Trudeau quits before Embiid ratings now”.
A funny “wind mishap” was the subject of a particularly popular joke. Trudeau was seen leaving to render his departure speech on a movie, but a gust of wind caused his speech papers to fall out. The message? “HAHAHAHA Trudeau’s publications retire before he does”!
And, of course, there were digs at Trudeau’s reputation. One person posted a backlash video with the comment,” People who become desperate for interest”, clearly aimed at Trudeau’s dramatic leave.
What’s next for Canada?
Trudeau will continue in his role as prime minister until the Liberal Party chooses a replacement president, despite his resignation. But, the political waters remain stormy. New Democratic Party ( NDP ) leader Jagmeet Singh, once an ally, announced plans to present a no-confidence motion against Trudeau’s government when Parliament reconvenes.
While Trudeau’s tenure as PM is ending, his tenure—marked by peaks, highs, and a touch of star flair—has cemented his place as one of Canada’s most talked-about officials. The computer appears to be more interested in his jokes than his reputation for the time being.
Canada is still waiting for its next section, but laughter is now appearing in the first draft on social media.
