Frank Thorp, a former Navy cadet, just launched his campaign to be the next , Ward 8 , alderman.
Thorp, a Democrat, is the next guy running against five-term Democrat incumbent , Ross Arnett.  , Will Cunha, an impartial who is also a , Naval Academy , student, launched his campaign in November.
Thorp, 65, enters the competition after 28 times in the Navy, retiring with the rate of back captain. An Annapolis local, he graduated from the , U. S. Naval Academy , in 1981. Before moving into public affairs, he spent about five years as a floor battle officer. Over the course of his occupation, his authority roles have included deputy assistant secretary of defense for , Strategic Communications , and president and CEO of the , U. S. Navy , Memorial. He is also a panel member of the , Annapolis Maritime Museum.
” I’m not retiring, I am rewiring”, Thorp said of his decision to retire from the defense and enter politics.
Thorp’s priorities include preserving Eastport’s coastal traditions, including boating facilities and accessible waterways for the community. Asked about marinas, Thorp says he is concerned about them being used as short-term rent. But, he said that Arnett is” place on” in trying to put together , a task force that looks at the problem.
” We have to concentrate on the particularity of Eastport in terms of the sea sustainability and its lifestyle,” he said.
Thorp supports creating bike racks and lanes to encourage quick go. He also wants more police officers to be hired to handle what he refers to as “unacceptable violence levels.”
” I think at the end of the day, we need to realize that Eastport is a coast. You know driving is a big part of the issue we have these. Thus, every decision we make in the future of Annapolis needs to take into account park, transportation, public service and all that”, he said.
Thorp submitted his papers to the city next year.
Arnett responded to a request for comment regarding the status of his papers when the Capital inquired about his plans to run for reelection in November.
Ward 1,  , Ward 2 , and , Ward 7 , also have individuals that have either announced they are running or have been verified through the town ‘s , Board of Supervisors , of Elections.  , Harry Huntley , and , Ron Gunzburger , — both Ward 1 , Democrats , — and Ward 2 Alderwoman KarmaO’Neill, a Democrat, are all , standard prospects for their individual rooms.
As of October, Tom , Sells, a Democrat who is running in , Ward 1, and , Ward 7 , Alderman , Rob Savidge, a Democrat, have said they intend to run. No single new has been verified as of , Jan. 3, according to , Eileen Leahy, head of the , Board of Supervisors , of Elections.
In the gubernatorial culture,  , Jared Littmann , and , Rhonda Pindell Charles , — both , Democrats , — are the only individuals that are verified so far with the votes table.
