On Tuesday, the average rate for a gallon of regular gasoline in the country increased by$ 3.068. This is more expensive than a month ago, when a gallon of gas was$ 3.02 and about one cent less expensive than a year ago, when regular gas was$ 3.079 per gallon.

Since after Christmas, fuel prices have been trending upwards, with the regular price for regular gasoline in December dropping to$ 3.01. However, despite the rises, gas prices have fallen substantially, particularly compared to the spring and early summer of 2024. Overall, the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is the lowest since May 2021, when the average amount was$ 2.985 per gallon, according to the Energy Information Administration.

The cost of fuel has been a significant problem for people in the country since President Joe Biden first took office because they were forced to spend a lot more than they did when President Donald Trump was in office. Less than six months after Biden’s inauguration, gas prices soared to over$ 4 per gallon in June 2021. Oil prices started to drop after reaching the 2022 highest nationwide average price.

Over the following two years, prices may continue to shift. Therefore, starting in May, the cost of a gallon of gas started to gradually decrease after reaching its highest for the year in April 2024. As of today, Jan. 7, the regional average rate for a gallon of regular gasoline is more costly than any day during Trump’s word between Jan. 2017 and Jan. 2020.

Depending on the state, prices vary across the country while the existing national average rate for standard oil is$ 3.068, depending on the state. Prices range from$ 2.56 to$ 4.54 per gallon. Hawaii is the state with the nation’s highest gas prices, which are$ 4.54 per gallon. However, at$ 2.56 per quart, Oklahoma has the cheapest fuel.

Similar to the rest of the state, the cost of fuel for regions in and around Washington, D. C., differ. Most of them, over the national average, have gasoline prices that are continuous.

Delaware, when the condition with the lowest gas prices in the area, now costs$ 3.092 for a gallon of regular gas on Tuesday. Similarly, Maryland is also higher than the national average with a current price of$ 3.137 per gallon, the most expensive among the states around the nation’s capital. Virginia has the cheapest gas, with a state average price of$ 2.945, while Washington, D. C., is the most expensive, costing$ 3.229 per gallon on Tuesday.
