After 12 times leading the Liberal Party, Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau on Monday said he was stepping down. A succession fight will start after his departure, in which some of the party’s most important figures will compete to take his place. Trudeau’s successor as party leader may even assume PM’s position. In general elections, that politician may experience the Conservatives and Pierre Poilievre, the party’s leader, in front of the public opinion polls. Elections may be held no later than October, but a vote in the House of Commons is expected to take place long before the government, under its new prime minister. Trudeau claimed that members of the Liberal Party may elect their successors in a vote. While no one has yet announced their election, here are some possible finalists.
Chrystia Freeland:
Former deputy prime minister and finance minister Chrystia Freeland’s departure from next month sparked widespread rumors that she would launch a campaign to work the Liberal Party. Freeland worked for Financial Times and Reuters as a journalist and newspaper head before beginning a prosperous career in Canada as a senior director at Globe and Mail in Toronto. Freeland returned to Canada to add Trudeau’s Democrats in 2013. She and a writer for NYT’s culture table are married. She played significant roles in Trudeau’s negotiations for the North American Free Trade Agreement during the first Trump administration, particularly in negotiating the son to it.
Dominic LeBlanc:
LeBlanc, who became FM when Freeland resigned, is Trudeau’s lifelong friend, and has known him since LeBlanc used to tell Trudeau and his sons. Both males were groomsmen in the burial of each other’s parents. Trudeau’s parents, PM Pierre Trudeau, was again PM, and LeBlanc’s parents, Romeo LeBlanc, had served as the elder Trudeau’s hit minister. LeBlanc considered running for the Democratic administration in 2012, but he changed his mind when Trudeau revealed his purposes.
Melanie Joly:
She has been Canada’s top minister since 2021. Despite her own reservations, Joly was concerned about the impact the task might have on her fertility treatments. Trudeau encouraged her to accept the foreign matters position. Melanie Joly has led Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, but has also confronted problems. She allegedly supported Chinese and Indian claims of foreign meddling and expelled six American diplomats from Canada.
Mark Carney:
Trudeau’s group had been pursuing Mark Carney, the original Bank of Canada governor who also oversaw the Bank of England, to get over as Freeland’s FM. Carney and Freeland are lifelong friends, and, consequently, attempts to seek Carney unravelled after Freeland’s public split with Trudeau. According to American media reports, Carney has since called democratic MPs to ask for their support and advice if he were to work for the management. Carney gained a reputation for sermonic speeches that veered into the social, including his opinions on the economic consequences of climate change, while serving as chancellor of the Bank of England. Carney argued that businesses should assist citizens and offer a shaky critique of capitalism in his book.
