France: France and Germany on Wednesday warned Donald Trump against threatening” royal edges” after the US president-elect refused to rule out military action to take Greenland, an automatic province of EU part Denmark.
” There is no question of the EU letting different nations in the world, whoever they may be… strike its sovereign edges”, French foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot said. ” We are a powerful globe. We must invest more in ourselves.
In Berlin, German govt official Steffen Hebestreit said” as often, the company rule applies… that frontiers must not be moved by power”. Barrot described Greenland as” European place”. Greenland is associated with the EU through Denmark, but it left in 1985 after gaining freedom.
” Is US going to invade Greenland? the answer is no”, said Barrot. But he added:” We are seeing the profit of the rules of the strongest… We need to reinforce, diplomatically”. Barrot said he believed US is “inherently no imperialistic”. Yet, a French state spokesperson said there was a “form of colonialism” in Trump’s responses.
