US secretary of state Antony Blinken has strongly dismissed the idea of the United States acquiring Greenland, calling it a “waste of time” to explain, New York Post information.
Speaking at a news conference in Paris on Wednesday, Blinken said,” The thought expressed about Greenland is certainly not a good one, but maybe more important, it’s certainly one that’s not going to transpire”.
His remarks were made in response to former US president Donald Trump‘s subsequent responses that made some suggestions about the possibility of an annexation of Greenland, actually making an esoteric suggestion.
Greenland, the nation’s largest area, is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, a foundation NATO part. Every notion of the area being for sale has been continuously rejected by both Denmark and Greenland.
Trump, but, remains unaffected. On Monday, he wrote on Truth Social,” Greenland is an amazing place, and the people will benefit enormously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation”.
Trump contends that the island’s proper place along Arctic shipping routes and its unique earth metals make it crucial to thwart adversaries like China and Russia.
Blinken underscored the importance of maintaining strong relationships, gently criticising Trump’s method. ” We’re stronger, we’re more successful, we get better results when we’re working closely with our friends, no saying or doing things that perhaps alienate them”, he said.
Denmark granted Greenland its right to self-determination in 2009, but its citizens continue to be Swedish people. While Greenland’s freedom is a chance, Swedish foreign minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen doubts it may result to US inclusion. ” If they materialise, Greenland will become independent, though hardly with an ambition to become a federal state in the United States”, Rasmussen said.
For today, Blinken’s remarks suggest the US has no ideas to inspire Trump’s Greenland passions.
