As party frontrunners work on advancing his plan ahead of his approaching opening, US President-elect Donald Trump met with Republican senators on Wednesday for a closed-door meeting.
Republicans are gearing up to lower taxes, reduce spending, and suppress immigration, with a wide-ranging agenda that will need the party to come up on many complex policy decisions.
The GOP is divided on whether to cut his ideas into two extensive bills.
Trump said,” I like one huge wonderful act, I always have and always will, but if two is more certain, it does get a little bit quicker because you can perform the immigration things first,” according to a statement released by the New York Times on Tuesday.
House Republicans favour a single act that encompasses duty breaks, border security, and power activities. In comparison, Senate Republicans, led by Senator John Thune, are considering splitting the program into two items. The second bill would include provisions for border security and energy, with tax cuts ensuing in the following.
One device Republicans are considering is budget reconciliation, a complex procedure that enables legislation to go with a straightforward majority, avoiding possible filibusters in the Senate.
The group is working toward a strategy that will provide them the speed they need as Trump meets with Republican legislators in both Washington and his Mar-a-Lago house.
After the riot on January 6 that saw his supporters wind the Capitol, Trump’s return to the Capitol is important.
