Utah State University’s trans resident assistant has sparked controversy and problem, but a campus official claims the institution is only breaking the law.
A recent article on X that claimed a trans pupil was working as a “dorm baby” in a sexual housing product made the situation known.
A spokeswoman for the university, Amanda DeRito, informed The College Fix via email that there are still some things to clarify regarding the incident, which was first posted on X three days ago and has since received 3.5 million views.
For instance, she said the university does not have an all-women’s bedroom, and the wording in the popular article, that the trans student serves as a “dorm mom”, is false.
” For quality, USU does not have all-female or all-male house rooms. In a co-ed, students at Merril Hall chose their rooms based on their gender. Citizen assistants don’t play a role in the family, and we don’t refer to them as “dorm mothers,” DeRito told The Fix.
“RAs are individuals who serve as gaze officials, and both women and men do so and offer gaze advising to various individuals assigned to them, including either men or women. We don’t own’ sexual RA ‘ roles or ‘ female RA ‘ roles”.
According to DeRito, the school must adhere to state and federal laws that prohibit housing discrimination, adding that “UTAH laws specifically protects transgender people from discrimination in both housing and employment.”
Traditional Utah pundit Eric Moutsos made the controversy roil after he posted on X that” Utah State University’s children’s dorm has reportedly allowed a’transgender ‘ person as a’ Dorm Mom,” turning a supposedly safe haven for sexual students into a nightmare of wokism that threatens the health of female people.”
He cited a Facebook post from” a concerned mother” outraged “because a man has now moved into her daughter’s all-women’s secure environment ( Merrill Hall Dorm ) without notice to the women students”.
“…After her grievance, the school, in a condescending walk, basically offered her daughter alternative housing, showing apparent negligence towards the safety and privacy of the remaining adult students in the dorm”, he continued.
Major media outlets like Libs of TikTok and even golf legend Martina Navratilova reposted Moutsos ‘ article.
DeRito did not contest the RA’s biological maleness in her message to The Fix.
” The native assistant in question applied, interviewed, and was selected through the same procedure as other RA candidates for the quarter, and, like all new school staff, new RAs must pass a background check”, she said.
” To be clear, USU Student Housing strives to create a welcoming environment for all students, regardless of their background or viewpoints”, she added. Many students benefit from on-campus housing because it provides them with additional support and access to resources as they navigate the transition to adulthood. Around 70 % of our Logan campus student body is located close to campus, and students can find off-campus housing there as well.
