Donald Trump, the president-elect, invited world leaders to his next commencement, breaking centuries of law.
The president-elect decided to break the custom after he won a second name in November 2024, even though no mind of a foreign nation has ever attended a political opening in the United States. His team cited the move as an opportunity to” create a dialogue with leaders of nations that are not only our enemies and companies,” according to his team.
Here’s a list of unusual officials who have been invited to Trump’s swearing-in service, as well as those who may have been snubbed.  ,
Argentina
After Trump physically invited him, Argentine President Javier Milei has made plans to attend the opening. Milei first objected to attending the opening because it would violate historical precedent. She became the first world leader to fulfill with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence after his triumph in 2024.
But, Milei agreed to break history at the demand of his companion after Trump spoke with the Brazilian president on the phone, according to local media reports.
Trump provided insight into why he had to go against tradition and request foreign leaders to his next opening in early December 2024.
” Some citizens said,’ Wow, that’s a little difficult, isn’t it?'” Trump stated during a press conference at the New York Stock Exchange. ” And I said,’ Maybe it is. We’ll view. We’ll see what happens.’ But we like to get much chances”.
Ukraine
Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, stated last week that he wanted to attend Trump’s opening but had not yet received an invitation.
” I would like to]attend], of training”, Zelensky said during a radio interview with Lex Fridman. ” I will be considering what is happening then in the battle because there are occasions of troubles, increase, several weapons, etc. But seriously, well, I didn’t. I didn’t come particularly during the war, unless President Trump invites me individually”.
During a press conference on Dec. 16, Trump said he had not invited Zelensky but that “if he’d like to travel, I’d like to own him”.
Zelensky’s archnemesis, Russian President Vladimir Putin, has not been asked to attend Trump’s swearing-in meeting. However, the president-elect suggested during a Tuesday press conference he did meet with the Soviet leader following the opening.
Great Britain
Trump and British Prime Minister Kier Starmer perhaps had just shook hands, and the international leader has not yet been invited to the opening. Starmer and Trump exchanged pleasant words with one another before the election, which was held for a two-hour supper. After the vote, Starmer’s chief of staff flew to join the president-elect’s group in Florida and Washington, D. C., and the two spoke on the phone again in December.
But, since then, top Trump supporter Elon Musk has criticized Starmer for running a “tyrannical authorities state” and urged other events to get energy. In one post, Musk asked if” America should liberate the people of Britain”.
While Starmer may be absent, Nigel Farage, who leads Great Britain’s right-leaning Reform UK party, is set to travel to the inauguration, despite also having a public feud with Musk.
” I’ve been a friend of Donald Trump’s for a decade”, Farage said Tuesday during a phone interview on a British radio broadcast. ” I’ve been very supportive of him, he’s been very supportive of me”.
Although Trump and Farage have long-standing allies, Musk requested that the British politician resign as leader of the Reform Party at the beginning of January.
Farage has signaled he wants to repair the relationship, saying he is” confident that whatever has been said, we can mend”.
China
In December, Trump invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend inaugural festivities. However, Xi reportedly declined the offer and is now scheduled to appoint a delegation of senior Chinese officials to meet in his place.
France
Although the two men had a friendly introduction at the grand opening of the Notre Dame Cathedral in December 2024, it is unknown whether Trump personally invited French President Emmanuel Macron to the ceremony.
However, a leader of a right-leaning French political party has been invited and will attend the event, according to a Politico report published Wednesday.  , While the head of France’s largest right-leaning party, Marine Le Pen, was reportedly snubbed by the Trump team, Eric Zemmour, who leads the Reconquête party, has accepted an invitation.
Hungary
One of the first world leaders to congratulate Donald Trump on his victory, Viktor Orbán, referred to his victory as” the biggest comeback in U.S. political history.” Additionally, he was one of the many foreign heads of state who met Trump at Mar-a-Lago after he won the election.
Gergely Gulyás, Orbán’s chief of staff, said on Dec. 12 that the Hungarian leader was not slated to attend festivities.
” There is no such plan, at least for the time being”, Gulyás said.
However, Orbán may still be” considering” attending the ceremony, according to CBS News.
Italy
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was invited to attend Trump’s festivities. Although the Italian leader has not confirmed her attendance, she met with the president-elect Sunday at his Mar-a-Lago home.
After the meeting, Trump said Meloni had “really taken Europe by storm,” and the two exchanged favorable words.
Brazil
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was invited to attend Trump’s swearing-in ceremony. However, passport troubles may keep him from traveling to the event.
After Brazilian authorities detained his passport in February 2024, Bolsonaro announced on Wednesday that his attorneys are working to get it released. He was charged with inciting a coup in an effort to overthrow the election.
According to Bolsonaro,” My lawyer, Dr. Paulo Bueno, has already forwarded a request to Minister Alexandre de Moraes for me to have my passport returned so that I can attend this honorable and significant historical event.”
