TOI Correspondent from Washington: Disdainful of Nato and European security during his first term, US President-elect Donald Trump has virtually torpedoed the alliance even before he takes office for a second term by seeking to occupy or appropriate territory of two of its members, Canada and Denmark.
As Trump continued to call for Canada to become the 51st US status by posting a map affixed to both nations in British colours, geopolitical lines around the world began to shiver. He also questioned whether Denmark has any legal right to control Greenland by saying,” but they should give it up, because we need it for nationwide security,” and he also said that defense or economic activity would not be tolerated.
At a press conference, Trump expanded on the concept of a Greater America, which included the US retaking the Panama Canal and renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, immediately dispelling any notions that he was trolling Denmark and Canada, whose retiring Prime Minister Justin Trudeau he had mocked as” Governor” of Canada.
Trump even repeated the danger four days during a wild press conference at his Mar-a-Lago land in Florida, saying” all hell will break out in the Middle East” if Hamas victims are never released by Inauguration Day.
” It will not be great for Hamas, and it will not be good, openly, for everyone. There will be no end to heaven. I don’t have to declare any more, but that’s what it is”, he warned without elaborating.
The receiving US President doubled down on his condemnation of the empire and its expansionism, which he claimed led to Russia going to war with Ukraine, as a result of his force against the almost 76-year-old Nato.
” Russia for many years argued that NATO involvement with Ukraine was impossible. That’s been like written in marble. And Biden responded,” They should be able to visit Nato,” Biden replied. Russia has something straight on their doorstep. In a covert defense of Moscow, he said,” I may understand their feelings about that.”
Trump’s topographical grab also caused a shaken Canada when he suggested resuming its military occupation.
It would also be significantly better for national security to get rid of that deliberately drawn range and to examine how it appears. We generally protect Canada”. Trump made remarks about the US’s largest trading partner, which shares the longest, and probably, most tranquil, border in the world, at nearby to 9000 miles.
There is” no snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would be a part of the United States,” according to retiring Prime Minister Trudeau, who blasted the proposed regional get.
Liberal Party leader, Pierre Poilievre, widely expected to change Trudeau, even clapped back at Trump, saying,” Canada will never be the 51st position. Period. We are a great and separate land”.
Mexico, however, reacted sarcasticly to Trump’s suggestion to rebrand the Gulf of Mexico Gulf America. At a media event, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum rolled out a map of the country’s past dimensions which states such as Texas, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and California, which were once part of Mexico.
” Mexican America, that sounds nice”, she said.
