Justin Trudeau, who just resigned after almost a decade in power, is now widely regarded as a leading candidate for the position.
However, Freeland’s transition to Canada’s next president is complicated by her strained relationship with former US President Donald Trump, who has described her as” completely poisonous and not at all beneficial to making offers.” This note came after their high-profile conflicts during Trump’s presidency, especially over trade issues.
Freeland, who previously served as Canada’s foreign minister, played a key role in the contentious negotiations between Canada and the US over tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, and he was instrumental in negotiations to change the North American Free Trade Agreement ( NAFTA ).
Due to her rising social standing in Canada, Freeland is now at the forefront of debate about the future of the Liberal Party. She had much supported Trudeau, but after publicly criticizing his social decisions, things turned out badly for her.
In December, Freeland issued a declaration calling out Trudeau for his” expensive social gadgets” like tax breaks and employee subsidies. This censure sounded like there was growing angst within the group and showed there was a disconnect between the two officials.
Freeland was chosen as the most interesting candidate among the Democratic Party candidates, according to a recent poll, which increased her chances even further.
If Freeland does get over the Liberal Party, her administration will be tested by instant problems, including a possible trust vote in Parliament.
