Raja Krishnamoorthi, an Indian American senator, once more voiced his opposition to the intimidation and hostility Hindus and other religious minority are experiencing in Bangladesh on Tuesday. He urged his colleagues to work right away to protect them as the “world is watching” is unfolding.
He addressed the US House of Representatives on Tuesday about the rising levels of hate against minority following Sheikh Hasina‘s resignation as prime minister in August 2024.
He emphasized the considerable rise in Hindu attacks after Sheikh Hasina assumed business. I protest Bangladesh’s ongoing persecution of Hindus and various religious minorities. During Bangladesh’s war of independence in 1971, an estimated 300, 000 to three million people were killed, mainly Hindus. Hindus in Bangladesh continue to be targeted today—with their homes and businesses being destroyed, and their churches vandalised”, he said.
“Since the ousting of the former Prime Minister Hasina last August, these attacks have increased again, with over 2,000 incidents reported in August alone. I have engaged with the State Department and called for action in upcoming Senate confirmation hearings, but we must do more. I urge my colleagues to act now to protect Bangladesh’s religious minorities. The world is watching, and we cannot let history repeat itself,” he added.
Authorities in Chittagong, where Chinmoy Krishna Das supposedly hung a yellow flag above Bangladesh’s national flag on October 25 and was later charged with sedition. A lawyer’s dying came on November 27 after his arrest on November 25 and the start of aggressive confrontations between his supporters and officers outside the Chattogram Court Building. As more arrests were made, the position deteriorated.
Adipurush Shyam Das and Ranganath Das Brahmachari, both of whom were detained on November 29 after visiting Chinmoy Krishna Das in confinement, were reportedly contacted by ISKCON Kolkata. The organisation’s Vice President, Radha Raman, stated that during the problems, criminals damaged an ISKCON center in Bangladesh.
